If it were me I would have done 1 of 2 things: 1)2 pieces that open up like a cupboard (hinges though...) 1)1 removable piece
It looks like the table originally had 3 boards going across, which means if he did the first idea, he'd awkwardly have 1 big and 1 small piece hanging off the sides. Fixing them all together like you said and just having 1 big lid would work, though it couldn't be stowed underneath while gaming (not enough room) like 3 boards could.
Or at least that's my non-professional-I-never-do-this-sort-of-thing opinion. Awesome as it is, though, and thumbed!
They started with that $10K monstrosity, but now they've got some for ~$1000, which isn't a totally ridiculous amount to pay for a nice piece of furniture.
Check out the woodworking section of your local library. Ours has a bunch of books on building furniture (and everything else). Also, I think you were the one who mentioned the plexiglas top. Plexi scratches _really_ easily, so it would likely look like hell in a couple of weeks. I'd go with tempered glass if you want a clear top. Shower doors are usually tempered, so if you have a local recycled building materials store, you might check there. Good luck.

reminds me of
which is built on a door that can be inverted into a carrier trunk (all the other pieces have to come off, of course).
Here's another solution, but you have to play on the second level - yours is MUCH better!!! well done craftery

Yeah, those guys were at Origins and GenCon the last year or two. Their tables look pretty awesome. Granted that big one is big $$$, but it would be nearly the ultimate in gaming accessories. I've considered getting one of their smaller ones. Even have a friend that created one himself.
I need ot write something up about the design. It was more a trial and error process. I'll try to post something about the design in the next couple of weeks. The 3x5 crokinle tables cost (depending on quality) was about $200 in materials.
This is fantastic. I was considering scultping some locations for this game (cities, strongholds etc) but setting the game up would then take even longer. With this solution, I could always leave the board set up!
