And since someone asked me: Yes, the pink and browns are different shades and sizes than come with the game.

That's only because my copy was missing them and I had to dig up replacements.

I have never used one but I think the left thumb would go in the hole and then then fingers wrap around the notch.

Also, when I bought this at Michael's Crafts, it was the only kind I saw so I guess it's unlikely they only stock left-handed palettes.

You're correct - you'd hold the brush in your right hand and dab into your palette being held in your left hand.
