Genius. I had only ever envisioned a high wall, which would have interfered with flicking pieces. This looks perfect: high enough to stop pieces, but still low enough to allow flicking them, even if they're right up against the border. I wants too!
This is my first attempt at making the border. I made it low enough so you can still flick discs that are touching the edge, but the discs still tend to fly off the board. I'll have to experiment with the height. I haven't actually played a full game with it. I took some trial shots in the effort to make a video, and maybe 1/4th of my shots flew off the board
The border does make the game more forgiving though. A miss fire can lead to a nice bank shot : )
NICE!!! I like it, does the game play a lot different? I can see doing some wild two corner bankshots to get around other discs.
Just played a game of this with a similar border last night. It was kind of hard to flick the pieces when they were touching the border (I made one out of 1/2" thick foam board that is a tad higher than this hardboard one). The pieces ricocheted nicely and the ability to make bank shots made the game a little easier to play. Instead of using a turn to line up pieces for a possible attack, we could attack immediately by using angles and bank shots. Bank shots added a different aspect of skill to the game as well. I can flick discs pretty straight, but sometimes my bankshots were at the wrong angle. I think it's definitely worth trying.
I'd suggest using a piece of 1/4" foam core first, then if you like the results, maybe upgrade to something more substantial. I spent a lot of time making ragged cuts with a saw, when I could have spent 5 minutes with a razor blade cutting some foam core. Also, the 1/2" thick foam core is a tad spongy, giving bankshots an add bounce, like a bumper in billiards. When I used the 1/2" thick foam core, I stacked the three game boards on top of each other to get the desired height on the bumper, otherwise the bumper was too high.
Shouldn't you be playing a game with me instead of wasting time on the Internet?
nice- bit this changes the mechanics of the game; it create the possibility of bank shots. I was thinking of something similar, but with the board in the center raised slightly and a railing along the outer edge.
