I finally broke down and bought some inks just to see if how hard it was to change the light blue to flames and still remain translucent. It was surprising easy. I didn't prime it or dunk it in anything just straight up put the ink on the blue and after two coats it looked pretty good, I knew I was going to backlight it so I put some orange and red inks in as well as the yellow. Looks too dark if not back lit so I would recommend just using yellow and light orange for day to day play meeple

Very nice. I was wondering if this would work or not. I like the translucent quality of some of the minis and if I paint them, don't want to lose them. I'd go for a blue flame though, similar to the original plastics. Gives it a ghostly look, or an even hotter flame, a la Azula.

Looks fantastic. Any chance you could give a step by step of how you did it?

That is awesome. If I can ask, where did you buy the inks?

Red Lion Smoke Shop in Salem, MA. Although it's probably a better idea to order them online as this stuff looks like it was in their Citadel rack for 10 years or more. Had dust, other blotches of ink from other leaky ink bottles (Citadel not the masters of making paint/ink containers). But they do have a 2 for 1 special just have to remind the clerks ($2.25 or $1.99 depending on the decade last priced).meeple

I think that would even be easier to work with. All you would have to do is apply 1 coat of blue ink and use it as a wash on the flames.

Nice, an inspired interpretation. I'm starting mine this way. I'll try to take pics along the way and write up what steps I'm going through as I do it.

I'm shooting for more yellow and orange as per Fsnam's recommendation. I'm going to attempt to make sure that I only use oranges and reds at the 'furthest' flames somewhat like the original here. It's going to take a lot of mental effort to resist using the dark colors as 'shading' in the recesses. However, that's not how fire works.

Good work overall and I'll post pics soon.
