The bottom tray (everything but the two small card spaces on the right) lifts out to make accessing the cards easy.

Very nice. I'm curious, do you "spine" your games or lay them flat? If you spine them, how well do they stay where you put them with this kind of storage solution?

Simple, with rare exceptions I never 'spine' them. Anyway, over the long term keeping boxes on their side can cause boards to buckle. If I'm transporting a game, I just try to keep it relatively flat. Also, since the board sits snuggly on the top of this insert and the box lid fits on with no gap, the board forms a lid to these compartments.

I also like doing away with the hassle of opening multiple zip-lock bags.

Very elegant. I have opted for keeping the original card insert, but cutting a couple of incisions to allow the elevated card steps on each side to be 'inverted' i.e. folding down into the box rather than out like two steps either side of the gap. I have done it to one side so far, and when they do the expansion I can do the other. As the incisions still keep the edges of the original step, the board rests on those.

What excact material is this? Where do you buy it and how "good" is it to be cut?

It's called foamcore and it's available from art supply stores. It's a layer of foam sandwiched between two sheets of cardboard, available in black or white, and it's very easy to cut with a craft knife.

What type of adhesive are you using to hold the foamcore together? This is pretty much what I've been thinking of doing with my new copy of Civ. I'd rather this than the Plano box solution.

White craft glue. I usually hold it in place with pins while it's drying then remove the pins later.

Foamcore to over-protect the units... yet the cards remain unsleeved/unprotected.

Oh my god! Off to the gulag with me immediately!

I personally never sleeve cards, I don't like the way they feel or slip around when sleeved.

The foamcore insert is for organisation as much as protection.

Cool idea, I use Plano Tackle boxes to keep all my pieces neat and organized. But I'm not sure using the 3 boxes will work w/ the expansion added. (ordering soon).
