There usually wouldn't be bubbles around his head, but there'd be a bottle marked "XXX" nearby.
There is no indication of the cause of death. It's a mystery! He hasn't been eaten by animals, there's no blood, no signs of injury.
I'm guessing he got lost in the woods and died of hypothermia. No heat - which is important in FotM. The animals haven't eaten him yet because they have to wait for him to thaw out. (Or possibly of starvation/dehydration. No food - important in all versions of Gric.)
