Definitely a nice moneymaker nestled in that mountain valley (worth $15/turn).
But why didn't Green head for the plains and take the prime open land in the upper half of the board?
Probably because it was our first learning game.

What were Green's first two (free) claim placements, since I presume Green went second and got two back-to-back.
I know that green took the spot at intersection 5/5 (adjacent to 3 mountains), and then if I recall correctly, also the spot at 6/6 (which would have yielded an initial income of $6 with the Ranch, but was not too far away to act as a house for something else later on -- at least I think that was green's reasoning at the time).
We both really enjoyed the game though, and looking forward to more.
Board coordinates are: vertical (0-7) / horizontal (0-7), so that the mine with 5 nearby mountains is at (4/2).
Green Grocery at (6/3) is marked marked at 9. But: (5/2) House - neutral (7/2) House - green (6/3) Ranch (is a house) (6/3) Ranch (anywhere on board) (6/6) Ranch (anywhere on board)
So it should be marked at 15, not 9.
Also:
Blue Grocery at (6/1) is marked at 9, but should be 12. (5/1) House - neutral (6/1) House - neutral (5/2) House - neutral (1/1) Ranch (anywhere on board)
Based on that you probably also didn't realize that the BANKS do not need to be immediately adjacent to the mines - that a mine anywhere on the board will boost a same-colored bank.

Keen eye, and very helpful comments -- thanks!
We did indeed miss out on some income, and that rule about banks not needing to be adjacent completely fell out of my head during play, even though I now recall having read it! Ah well, your comments will definitely help us with our next go round.

Just a quick comment for 2 player games.
I tend to play on the river side ignoring the outer parcels completely.
Thanks for the suggestion. We did consider it, but thought for our first experience we'd try the main board to see how we felt about it. Will most likely give the river side a try on our next play.

River is good for 2 Player but does add some complications with some of the tiles, so starting on the plains is a good plan.
