If plastics are left out for a long time, UV damage can occur causing said plastic to become brittle. Cards like this, if left under UV (the sun) for some time would essentially crumble like a dried leaf.
Edit: Granted.. it would take a good while for this to happen, you'd have to leave your cards outside for weeks.
