That is awesome!

I can't help but feel that the fighters get lonely in there, completely separated from each other by unforgiving cold plastic walls.

That is the Coliseum of Rome. Each area is a separate holding area where Cesar keeps their mighty prisoners until it is time for battle. If you let them congregate, they'll rise up and one of them will kill the Emperor and give Rome back to the people.
