What I wonder here - black did build a residence on his own building - rahther then placing it on a neutral one. What can be a good reason for doing so? When there was the lawyer itself?
I would say black wanted some gold (bottom building), as well as the opportunity to build another stone building. This was the first time most of us had played this, and besides, is there anything really wrong with putting a worker on your own building if you need the resources?
The question wasn't about where he placed the worker. It is about where the residence was built. When you build a residence it replaces either one of the pink neutral buildings or one of your own craft buildings. Te question is, why would someone remove their own craft building and the VP potential of other people using it, when you could remove one of the neutral buildings instead?
Ok, maybe I read the question wrong. How can you tell Black built a residence on his own building? (Perhaps a reason for doing so is to prevent others gaining a needed resource?) (I'm less a of geek than you might think...)
As for the gate, I it was only used a couple of times. So, it's more important, is it?
The rules say that a residence can be built on a neutral pink building or a craft building that you own. The general consensus is that it usually better to choose to upgrade over a pink building because you are denying yourself a cheap placement or VPs if someone else uses your building. It should be a very rare occurance that you use your own building before all of the pink buildings are used up.

Residences can only be built on a neutral (pink) building or one of your own craft buildings. The residence in the foreground (second row from bottom of photo) is not where one of the neutral buildings was -- therefore it has to have been built on top of one of black's craft buildings...
Things are looking pretty risky, placing workers after the provost. Perhaps that's why black placed one of his workers on the special building that lets you move the provost for free.
Also, black did build residence over one of the pink tiles, and also managed to place two workers in other pink tiles. So perhaps black still finds the other pink buildings to usefull for himself to replace.
Besides, we don't know what which building of his was turned into a residence. Maybe the other players were getting too much use out of it to justify the measly one VP it generates.
An even better reason to build over your own craft building with a residence is if your craft building is the church... as long as you can immediately rebuild the church before anyone else gets their greedy hands on it!
This may be what black attempted to do (unsuccessfully).
