Almost every math trade I've participated in over the years has had roughly 40% of the entries happen in the final 1-2 days.

Reply: RPG Design:: Re: Looking for playtesters - Drawbridge

by Rhyolite

I'm just gonna cross-post this here in case anyone in the RPG Geek community wants to reply, refute, or otherwise comment on this text wall. :P

The game looks pretty solid overall! A few little suggestions: first, while the fold-up book is fun, it would be very nice to have a PDF that was in a more linear format in addition to the fold-up book. It's kind of nice to be able to read things while they're still digital without printing them. Second, I noticed that a stat bonus of 9 yields a -1 modifier. It might make more sense to make this modifier 0 since 9 is the median that the 3d6 stat roll would yield.

I'm planning on using a setting where the world is just discovering magic, so I'll probably award spells and whatnot as rewards and players will be able to grant buffs and maybe heals if they're bard-ish types or clerics or something.

Regarding the INT stat; it might be worth just printing in the book what it's intended for since that's never really covered. While it might kind of obviously be the caster-stat, it's probably still good form to explicitly state that. Kind of out of curiosity, but if you were GMing this, would you have players make rolls for diplomacy or bluffs during certain circumstances? I was considering doing this to give a little more weight to INT, but I'm not sure.

The fortune dice is a super-fun idea! I played a world of darkness game for a little while and the exploding 10s were pretty exciting and even the botches on 1s could be pretty fun. Not sure how a botch mechanic could be added to a d6 game like this since 1s are so much more common; might not be worth figuring out how to do anyways since some players hate them. :P

A question regarding armor- since there doesn't seem to be any drawback or prerequisite to using it, how should it be managed? I would seem silly if every player picked up +2 great armor arbitrarily since it was better than good armor or none. So should armor be hard to come by? Or maybe certain character archetypes should be limited to using only certain armor? Or possibly a stat requirement to don certain armor? The shield seems like it would also be always used unless dual-wielding were a beneficial option.

On that topic, would you allow a player to dual-wield light and/or medium melee weapons? Two medium weapons would yield 4d6 weapon damage- a full damage die better than the 3d6 two-handed weapons for a lower STR cost. If it were only light weapons though, there would be no reason not to dual-wield if you were in melee distance and had a poor STR stat. Maybe they could be used by penalizing the off-hand to only being 1d6 damage and allowing mediums to be dual-wielded with an extra DEX requirement? Or if you dual-wielded only light weapons it might still be good to tack on the the extra DEX requirement just to ensure that not everyone does it arbitrarily.

This seems like it could be a really cool and enjoyable RPG! It reminds be a bit of XD20 if you've ever played that, but a few more rules, sensibly added, and with d6s and a lot less pages of anecdotes DMing advice. :P At any rate, I'm looking forward to giving this a shot!

Very much so. I have a Aces & Eights campaign in the works were the town is the center of the story. Everything is based on advancing the town. (Think Deadwood tv show)

I keep dropping news stories at our weekly game, the players are really starting to get excited. Cant wait to start!

They also provide pizza for anyone running a game. I love this place!

Reply: PF-005: The Starnaman Incident:: Reviews:: Re: The Best Post-Apocalypse Module I've Seen

by kobold47

It's a funny story, actually: in the original draft, the city was just called "Trade town." Over the course of producing this module, the publishers discovered that Starnaman is a pretty strong-willed guy, prone to digging in his heels on various details. So, in a last playful jab, they ended up naming the obstinate townsfolk in his honor.

Usually...although the last game (for my F2F group) not so much. Mostly I think that was because it took me by surprise, the group had discussed it but I was late that day, so I didn't find out until a few weeks later. Then I had a really hard time finding a character concept I liked (and that fit with the rest of the group). It turned out well, the game is great now, but it was a rocky road!

Usually I do get excited, though - I am waiting for the next game to see if that was an anomaly or if my tastes are changing.

I do, even when I know that it will most likely be a disappointment. Last night one of our GMs started a new Pathfinder game and even though I'm already leary of some of the rules and adjustments to rules he's made. I find myself excited for the possibility of the new game.

Maybe everybody is waiting until the last minute to post. :)

I find the difference very curious. I wonder if the convention date change this year means lower attendance resulting in a smaller math trade.

Last year with 3 days to go, there were 1197 entries. Still less, but not as big as it seems when you exclude last-minute entries.

If my character has it, Latin, Game Playing (Go), NES Assembly Programing, crochet, choreography (hula), musical instrument (armpit), taxidermist, astrologist, gaffer, grip, best boy, magical wand maintenance, groundskeeper (private school), janitor, riding (Arackian sandworm), psychiatrist (Gamorian), phychohistorian...

my favorite remains: Obscure Knowledge (GM's Plot)

Anyway, you want me to take skills that the system/adventure/plot is ready to handle.

I wonder if the convention date change this year means lower attendance resulting in a smaller math trade.

I imagine that's exactly what it means. The exhibit hall is sold out, so the vendors will be there. We'll see if they have anyone to sell their product to.

69 users so far this year, 132 total users last year.

Last year's was pretty epic, though. The 2010 Origins Math Trade had 77 total users, and 1077 items. So we're actually not that far out of line with that one. Just stinks to take a step back, but what can you do?

Hopefully we'll all still get some good trades out of this...

Before our current campaign started, the GM said: "I'd like you all to invent and take at least one useless yet colourful skill so that you're not just a bunch of optimised stat blocks." I went with scrimshaw.

I can only remember hurricanes off the top of my head; at least twice while the characters were on a ship at sea.

A game I played in had a pretty severe volcanic eruption that dropped heavy ash like snowfall nearly 100 miles away. The chimney sweep guild had to run press gangs to get enough labor to sweep off rich peoples' roofs.

My aunt bought me the Pink Box in the 80s. I read it several times, tried (poorly) to work out how to play with my younger siblings, then it mostly collected dust until my mom covertly trashed it one day.

A few years ago I picked up another Pink Box on ebay, for the nostalgia. Sadly, that copy lacked some of the cool odds and ends like the vintage TSR catalog of other products, the crayon, etc.

I may jump into one after I look through the threads and see if one strikes my fancy.

:d10-4:Mountains

:d10-5: I attend one every year in March. I try not to. But there are times I know I'll need "X" with certain GMs just because of the amount of weight they add to that aspect in-game. But most often I try to create a character based on a personality I imagine for the character.

Session: Gamma World Roleplaying Game: A D&D Roleplaying Game:: My first Gamma World adventure, or: How I Basically Made the Big Bad Blow Hisself Up.

by MasterGeek

GM'd her first ever game last night, with the first RPG she has owned. She went with the adventure from the core book for her first run, which was fun. Due to time constraints, we ended up having to skip half of the encounters to get through this one-shot in one night, but it was still a fun time. Here are the players:

Me: Cat Thing, a Felinoid Plant.

Paul: Fallon, a Radioactive Plant

Rob: Bricks Hithouse, a Radioactive Giant

Amanda: (don't remember her character's name), a Felinoid Cockroach.

The session started out with MistressGeek telling us that for some time now, on a nearly daily basis, robots have been rolling down from the hills, beeping a few times, and then blowing up. She did say that several times, before ceasing to work, a few of the robots managed to fire off rocket blasts against the village walls.

We hadn't really discussed how we knew each other, so as everyone kind of sat there I took it upon myself to say "Well, fellow village guards, we should probably go and look into this, don't you think?"

We backtracked along the path the robots came down until we came across the steading of some bandits who had been known to be raiding villages. For some reason, even though I swore I just wanted to be a "fighty" character, I decided to approach the porker (mutant pig being) closes to us and bluntly ask "So, uh, you know anything about robots?" He said no, but a successful insight check informed me he was lying

We rolled initiative and entered combat. The first alpha mutation that I'd drawn was a Gravity Well. I created it over a green spot on the map that turned out to actually be a pit. I pulled all four enemies towards it, yanking them away from us and one fell in taking damage.

At that point Fallon moved in and used his lashing tendrils attack to beat on several of them while Bricks Hithouse swung at them with a lamppost and the Felinoid Cockroach threw her boomerang at them from range.

One of them connected with me, bloodying me in one lucky shot and knocking ME into the pit. Luckily, being a Felinoid I took no fall damage as it was only a ten foot drop. I wasn't able to climb back out, but Bricks lowered down his lamp pole and pulled me free with that. After this encouner, I discarded my used Alpha Mutation and drew a new one, getting a Time Slip card.

From there, beetween the four of us we managed to soundly trounce the two badgers and the two porkers, then made our way into the steading proper. Once inside the steading we were attacked by two badgers and a yexil (some kind of mutant lion-bat-thing). We were getting hit pretty well and I was down to six hit points when I backed out through the doorway (out of line of sight of the badgers) and started simply firing my nail slingshot at the Yexil. Bricks and Fallon kept swinging at the Yexil with their lamp pole and barb wire-bound baseball bad respectively, and the Feliroach attacked the badgers up on platfroms with her boomerang.

We were doing quite well when the commotion woke up a badger sleeping in the next room, adding another enemy to the fray. Once the yexil was taken out, it was fairly simple to mop up the badgers present. In searching the yexil nest, I found a couple of pieces of omega tech that I added to my growing pile of tech cards.

The Feliroach and I finally started thinking correctly and remembered that being Felinoids, we both have excellent stealth. We both made stealth checks (rolling extremely well) before moving into the next room, as did Bricks. Fallon, with a horrendous dex and in heavy armor didn't bother. This meant that as soon as we walked into the next room, he was the only one the two porkers hiding behind an upturned table saw, and attacked. Luckily this was a new encounter or he'd have been taken out quite quickly.

On my turn I moved towards the table, stealth attacked one of them with my tendril lash as my standard action (wounding but not killing them), then activated my time slip and pulled myself off of the board, waiting for the right time to pop back into existence.

Using her cockroach wallcrawl ability, the stealthed Feliroach scampered across the walls to drop down behind the porkers, attacking them where cover would be no use. She finished one off and Bricks attacked the other, missing terribly. Fallon hit, wounding the remaining porker and then I popped back into the time stream to finish him off. Still in initiative I re-stealthed and rounded the corner to see two more badgers close to a machine. I dropped stealth to fire my slingshot at one, connecting. However, as my turn ended I took heavy damage from some sort of electric field emanating from the machine and watched as the wounds on the badger began to close. I shouted back to my companions to not get too close to the machine.

From that point on, we stood back, avoiding attacks as best we could and simply taking pot shots at the machine itself to put it out of commission so that we could get close enough to these badgers to take care of them. After 50 points of damage, the machine sparked and died and we again charged into the fray, smashing and hacking at the three badgers (one of which stepped from where it had been hiding behind the machine) until they, too were gone. that was when I saw a cage full of humans. We opened the cage but they just stood there, staring blankly. We weren't sure what the purpose of the machine had been, but whatever it was it had apparently zapped their brains. Seeing that we could be of no help to these poor people, we continued on deeper into the steading. As I used my time slip Alpha Mutation, I discarded it and drew another, a rain maker card. This didn't look to be extremely useful, but ah well. As this was going on, we were continuing to gather omega tech cards but none of us had really bothered to try them for one reason or another.

Again, the feliroach and I entered the room stealthed. The room was full of a glowing blue moss covering portions of the floor. We were to find that, while standing on the moss when we tried to overcharge an Alpha Mutation, we gained a +2 to our Overcharge roll and everytime we would roll a 5 or under for anything we would trigger and Alpha Flux, thus discarding whatever Alpha Mutation we currently had (used or not) to draw a new one.

This room had a couple of blood birds and some kind of grey carnivorous moths flying above it. This was a cavern with a spiral leading further down to an opening in the wall. This was to prove a difficult battle. I used my alpha mutation and overcharged it, creating a rain storm in the back corner. This provided concealment for anything within the five squares the rain covered and the overcharge allowed me to strike at an opponent in the rain with a lightning bolt when first activating the mutation. I succeeded at the overcharge roll but failed at the attack roll, so the lightning bolt didn't connect. Now the PCs (and the enemy) in the rain had complete concealment from any attacks. This was to prove more of an advantage to us than to the one enemy that was present with us.

Again, I was mostly the only one using my Alpha Mutations. Pretty much everyone else just used their novice powers and weapons. After several rounds and everyone but the giant coming close to death, having to use their second wind and then coming close to death again, we defeated the airborn creatures. I discarded my used rain maker card and drew my final Alpha Mutation of the night, a Force Wall. We then made our way through the cave, deeper into the complex.

At this point, we were getting close to the end of the night. We wanted to finish the adventure, so we skipped three of the encounters to go straight to the last.

We entered what appeared to be a lab. There was a humanoid rabbit standing up on a landing next to a computer terminal, with a metal helmet of some kind on his head. There were floating robots on either side of the room and a humanoid rabbit warrior just in front of us. Again, the only one not stealthed was Fallon, so he was the first to be attacked. The rabbit and a robot came over to attack him. The robot hit, the rabbit (called a hooper) missed. Then the king hooper activated his helmet, dropping a large mechanical claw from the ceiling to grab Fallon. Luckly, it slid off of his armor and he remained safely in place.

The other two broke stealth to attack the robot and the hooper that were engaged with Fallon. While they did this, I stealthed my way directly in front of the king and fired up at him with a flame thrower I'd picked up after an encounter (an omega tech card). I missed, and was now the most obvious target for the king hooper to attack. Luckily he didn't, opting instead to fire a grenade at my allies, luckily missing. One robot was destroyed, leaving only the hooper engaged in melee and the other robot on the other side of the room, that was simply shooting away at them. The team killed the hooper and started making their way towards the second robot. It was then I had an idea.

I used my Force Wall and overcharged it. This allowed me to create an invisible wall that could fill twelve squares and be four squares tall. I used this to unknowingly box in the king hooper. My allies fought against the robot as I stood there waiting. They had damaged it to near death. The king hooper fired his grenade launcher at them again. Sadly, being invisible, he was unaware of the wall so his grenade bounced back and he took the damage himself. Injured, bloodied, but still standing, he glared at me, knowing who was to blame.

The rest of the crew finished off the last robot as I told the king if he surrendered, I would drop the force wall. This was a ploy as I knew if he agreed to surrender and I dropped the wall he'd just attack us again. I made an interaction roll vs. his insight. He believed me and "surrendered." I put my hands to my head, concentrating, and "dropped" the wall. He promptly fired his grenade launcher at us again. The grenade again hit the wall and blew up in his face, blasting him to an inch of his life. I immediately dropped the wall and opened up with the flame thrower, making him a crispy critter.

Thus we saved our village and let the king hooper more or less take himself out of the picture.

We all decided this was a pretty fun game, but when we play again we're going to create new characters including the origins from the expansions as well. This time around, so many of our origins were similar that we felt like we all filled more or less the same niche in the group.

All in all a great game and a fantastic first GM session from MistressGeek!

Thread: Play By Forum:: Looking for a second-Chair DM

by agduncan

	Hi There!

Are you an aspiring GM who has the handle on being a great player, but hesitates taking the jump to running a game because you worry about things like player balance, plot progression and railroading? Do I have an opportunity for you!

Ok, actually I just need some help! I'm running a PBF game of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (3rd Edition) and while my story and characters are great and everything is going nicely, I'm tripping over myself in combat. I've got some other stuff on the go and I have trouble running the combat scenes. What I'm looking for is a combat GM. Someone who will get nitty-gritty with the combat scenes for me, playing the part of NPC's and jumping in to referee player rolls in my absence.

In return I'll give you the inside on the story telling aspects, reasons why to present a story in which ever way, how to deal with problem dice or situations and I will owe you in a way you decide. You can turn that favour in however you want - You need a play-tester for a new all-D4 rpg you're developing, I'll do it. You need backstory written about something, I can do that. You need a school essay edited for grammar or content (subject to area of study) I can do that (Though obviously within the constraints of academic honesty). You need me to weigh in on your side of an argument (within reason) I can do that. You need a back-up bass player for your Skype drum and bass combo - you don't want me, but I'd do it. My point is you'll have earned a sincere and genuine favour from me for the help.

Does this interest anyone?

If you want to read the story so far you can find it Here: die Stunde schlägt - Chapter 1, Gheaţă Foamete

As a sweetener, previous knowledge of the rules is not required, I'll buy you a digital copy of them (Though it would be expected that you well familiarize yourself with the combat rules).

Big difference between last year and this year. Last year there were 82 pages and 2031 list entries. This year, with only about 3 days to go, we're at less than half with only 36 pages and 898 entries. Maybe everybody is waiting until the last minute to post. :)

I find the difference very curious. I wonder if the convention date change this year means lower attendance resulting in a smaller math trade.

I actually recognize most of these but I don't know what to do so I'll go over to the tavern, rearrange some tables so it is appropriate for a party of adventures. Let them go figure this out.

(Note: can you name the book series that the forward of the first book has what turns out to be a god arranging tables for the adventures? - I think of this as the Mid-May after 5 PM Eastern time guess the role playing related novel challenge that is probably pretty easy but without any prizes extravaganza - I really think I remember the book correctly though it has been years and I'm at work right now so no promises.)

As a GM, I do it all the time because what I type is frequently dependent on the outcome of a roll I made in the same post. I have to publish the post to see the result of the roll, then edit the post to add any fallout from the roll.

You can't edit a die roll, but you can delete a roll and create a new one. You're not guaranteed better results doing that, though.

by lazo

	Hi,

I've just noticed that following the Buy ÜberGeekBadge link in my profile results in umlaut error (highlighted). It seems that it's not encoding problem because the problematic vowel is displayed messed up only once. I've actually had to add spaces in the highlighted area to make the problem visible in this post.

Page source reveals that the wrongly displayed Ü contains "& amp ; U u m l ;" while others contain just "& U u m l ;"

Purchase ÜberGeekBadge
Purchasing an ÜberGeekBadge will allow you to create and customize a label that appears in your profile.

You only need to purchase an ÜberGeekBadge one time. You will then be able to modify your ÜberGeekBadge at any time.

[BGCOLOR=#FFFF66] & U u m l ; berGeekBadge[/BGCOLOR] Cost: 50 GeekGold.
I authorize the ÜberGeekBadge purchase for 50 GeekGold.

Cheers!
Minimum is 16 characters if the site will handle it. When I need to enter the password (if it's not stored), a simple copy/paste does the trick.

So, basically everything is on a USB drive, if I understand correctly? It's encrypted on that drive, that you then log into with a password? And you just plug in the USB drive to whatever computer you're on? I guess as long as you don't lose the USB drive or someone doesn't steal it and figure out your master password. :D I can barely keep track of my sunglasses, I'd be worried about depending on a USB drive of such critical importance.

You can choose to have a key file, and/or a master password. If you avoid the keyfile, no need to have a super critical USB drive. If you make the master password a phrase, its much much more difficult to brute force. And pick a phrase that you will remember but no one else would guess easily (as the XKCD comic in other posts mentions). Something like "A crazy battery broke Battlestar Natalie." would be quite difficult to brute force, it even includes a proper name not in the dictionary.

As for ease of access, if you put the database into something like a gmail message that you've emailed to yourself you can go back and retrieve it at any time. Throw a copy on your USB if you like for conveniance.

One can also use something like keepass to help your family access your financial stuff if you should pass. You could put the password into a safety deposit box or something. One could use the same database or a different one.

I once pitted my players against a forest fire in a dense forest. It wasn't terribly memorable, but we had fun with it at least.

I also put my characters into a situation in which they had to endure a blizzard of "blood snow" (from the Frostburn 3.5e supplement). What made the whole scenario so great was that they were in a situation on the tundra that Endure Elements alone couldn't solve for them.

Eventually they built an under-snow burrow and waited out the storm, but the ground above was still covered in blood snow and they couldn't just walk across it toward safety. And then... cue the ice devils!

They couldn't fight under the snow for fear of it collapsing on top of them, couldn't stand on the snow outside to fight either. Eventually they used a few of the party's flight-capable characters to distract the ice devils and draw them away from the burrow, then one of the druids turned into something big that could fly and ferry the rest of them toward safety.

The whole scenario took an entire session to play out, from the time they left the little village they had been in to the time they finished killing the ice devils. Fun times.

This thread really makes me want to run a few more natural disaster-themed adventures, now...

Yes, same here. I think lots of people were left scratching their heads. Didn't one of the pieces have a small boat on it as well? It would have served them better to make a shore & sea set that had water, docks, and boats rather than making the desert one so confusing.

Also, if I recall correctly, this set had a piece that helped finish building the previous set's 3D piece (it was left out of the DU6: Harrowing Halls set accidentally or something).

Nothing huge, but I've used a thunderstorm to good effect twice.

Once, they were on one of the Ryukyu islands of Japan, trying to get back to shore, and everything was dark and slippery. It added to the atmosphere quite well.

The other time, they were out at sea on a small ship and the crew had turned on them. Inevitably the conflict moved outside of the cabin and dudes ended up in the drink. It was fun.
