And I did check the rule book (the symbols), I can't understand what became wrong. I assume it's not a scrollwheel-move option issue. Or arrow keys. I'm always afraid of using those with these contests. I try to select some text / click in it before doing anything.

Thread: New User Questions:: Can I see Pending contributions to BGG

by AnnC

I've just begun contributing to BGG and am trying to find my way around the incredible features of this site.

Is there any way that I can see/check/edit a Pending contribution to the data base (whether it be a board game, image, correction or whatever)?

I've searched but can't find the answer to this, and can't find anything to click on anywhere that might take me to a pending entry.

Thanks in advance!

It sounds like you're well beyond the level of "this is my baby" and more around the range of "I want to be done with this."

Usually, I'd say never go to an agent because it's a waste of time and money. However, in your case, where the game is mostly complete (and it sounds like it's not your little darling anymore), just don't spend any money or too much time.

Omg that is too gd funny. I have to do that :)

Oh wait I can't. I just wanted to chime in because of my similar experience with PayPal, buying the same innocuous overseas product, with amounts of US$50 or less. I think partly because I'm Iranian-American, and have an Iranian name, but really, the second time it happened they demanded I scan and FAX in my proof of citizenship. I was actually concerned what office in a giant faceless private corporation I was scanning and faxing all my most personal docs to, and for what? Because the Innovation art is cooler in the European version? Because I was hunting to see if Iello also did an art rendition of the Echoes of the Past expansion? And these somehow indicate I may be trying to violate recent layers and layers of indistinct and seemingly intentionally blurry sanctions on trading with Iran? Through Italy? Really?

Or could it be because PayPal is monitoring names like mine, as stupidly and ineffectively as it is monitoring words like "Havana". How will the terrorists ever outsmart us with such sharply nuanced screening mechanisms?

And how ironic that big banks' destruction of, and profiteering-via-outsized-political-influence-and-rigging-of-horrible-laws-and-removal-of-decades-of-wise-regulations off of, western economies; my experience as an Iranian-American with the poorly targeted and even more poorly executed sanctions on what may possibly some day be gasp the third bellicose country in the Middle East with a nuclear arsenal; and this thread, are making me move towards something I would normally never consider: islamic banks. How painfully ironic.

I concur with Daniel. My sniping has nothing at all to do with price. My price I'm willing to pay is my price, period, sniping or not. Sniping is about being the final bidder and winning, nothing more.

If the auction doesn't have a hard time limit, then that's fine. If it's a timed auction, then the practice is an absolute necessity.

I know I'm pretty vague on this, but I'd like to see a whole game played out to know how it all works. I guess I should at least find and read the walkthrough that comes with the game.

The walkthrough will give you a good idea of how things function, but it will not show the flow of a normal game, really. There are some full plays in the play by forum section on this site, and there are a couple of videos of play (not full, though) in the video section. I can tell you that personally I've never felt the game getting tedious or that there's an obvious strategy. The random offers of spells, advanced actions, and units, the "Draw x+1, pick x" nature of skill and artifact acquisition, and the random drawing of tiles and enemies provides quite a bit of breadth and keeps the game fresh. There are quite a few optional rules to spice things up a bit. Whether or not that will work for you is of course impossible for me to say but I can tell you it works for me, at least after this many plays.

You might feel like you've gotten bogged down if you don't analyze your play and adapt. A couple of my solo plays I aborted on round (not turn!) two or so because I realized I really screwed up. Once every few games I have a turn (meaning one card draw of several within a round and there are six rounds) where I'm king of hemmed in because of my card draws but it doesn't have an overall effect on whether I win or lose. You just have to adapt. And adapting is fun.

I would also try to think way outside the box and keep it SIMPLE. IMHO simple is best because it allows people to learn to to play easily, and if your game is well built with depth, it will allow them the enjoyment and challenge of mastering the game.

Typherion wrote:

I see no reason why you should avoid using any particular mechanic just because it has been used before.

I agree with Tomarush in that it is important to make players feel they are playing an original game, with new challenges and tactics. I am also not opposed to the idea of taking one mechanic from another game if it works. In this thread it has been discussed that there are inherent flaws in the 'lands = mana' system, that I, as a light magic player was not aware of. However the main reason I decided to throw the question out to BGG was to see what interesting ideas people had, or had seen used in other games. There is a lot of food for thought here, and it has really helped me.

Ive got two kindred, one garou, one Mage, one highlander, and one mortal. It's a great game, I just wish I could get the players to make more sense. Lol. Basically, I've taken Robert Weinberg's "Red Death" series and modified it for the entire myths and not just for vampires. It's fun, although sometimes imbalanced. Lol

Heh, mixed-WoD games usually end being a fun mess. Mixed-Exalted games tend to be more coherent but still massively imbalanced.

It makes more sense, from my point of view, to let players do whatever they like. And since each rule set discusses the other types of supernatural, why not go the full distance? It's my responsibility as the gm to make sure the players have characters that can abide each other, and that they have a reason to be fighting the same enemy.

Bought the first exalted book, then gave that away. Never got into it; it just wasn't my thing, I guess. Tbh, I'm not big into high-fantasy.

As an aside, if anyone asks, I hate typing on my iPad, although I suppose it's better than going without.

Hope you are enjoying the remainder of your weekend. It is a fabulous day here - heavy frost, leading to clear, still skies of a brilliant blue. It's currently 0°C and tipped to be 15°C - this is why I love living in Canberra.

Off to work now. Toodles.

I envy you those nice temperatures, it has been a scorching 25°C here and my bald patch is a little on the burn side. :shake:

Regards

Gnome

Don't come out to Australia during summer - 25°C is perfect. I wish it got no more than that every day in summer, if it hovers around 30°C it is a good summer. A scorcher is 35-40°C.

With our group we usually do 1 or 2 lighter games, then a more intense/longer game. Tends to work pretty well because then we can sort of cater to everyone.

Developig a game is fun but when youre considering publishing one it becomes more serious and other things like patwnts, copyrights, and trademarks must be taken into serious consideration. This is by far one of the hardest parts of developing a new game.

This is a point that likes to come up regularly around these boards, and people who have appropriate authority have chimed in, and the take away message I've picked up is that hardly any game company (save Wizards etc) has the financial backing to afford a patent let alone the incentive to bother. Which is to say, there are fewer patents on game mechanics out there than patent lawyers and publishing companies would like to have you believe.

Also, the borderline on how far reaching the patent covers is likely not to extend to a game which has a mechanic that is kind of sort of similar to the mechanic in this game but is otherwise a totally different game.

ALSO, game companies that do bother taking out patents on *mechanics* (ie: the component parts that make up a game) are doing damage to the growth of the hobby by unnecessarily restricting future designs. Consider, we wouldn't have great games like Nightfall or Thunderstone if the publisher/designer of Dominion saw fit to get a patent on the deck-building mechanic (with the right generic wording to cover such derivatives).

by kevruth

My best advice is to not spend too much time in the exhibit hall. It can lead to compulsive buying not to mention waste a lot of time that you could be spending playing games, being in ticketed events or seminars, or even missing a good meal. The exhibit hall is expensive. Almost everything is full retail. Save your money and buy those items from your favorite retailer after the show when they might be cheaper unless the vendor is offering some kind of an Origins exclusive bonus item.

Most important thing is don't schedule too much stuff. Leave plenty of open time for unexpected things like finding someone who is about to teach that game you always wanted to play.

What it could be ready for is blind playtesting. So mail some copies of the game to people who know nothing about it (but who are willing to play it and give feedback). Some people have had success using BGG to find such people.

Good luck!

This is the exact sort of FUD that people believe about snipers which gives them a bad rap. I have been sniping for 10 years and it is never in an attempt to win by $1. It is to win, period.

And you are the spokesman for all snipers in the world?

If your logic were true - that sniping doesn't reduce the final price - then the kind of auctions where sniping is the rule (more specific, auctions where everyone contacts the seller privately to make a bid) would be more popular.

Sniping is a way to make the final price less than in an auction where everyone has enough time to react to a bid. You may consider yourself a rational being and people who try to overbid you emotional, but that is just nonsense. You are not the sole judge on what behavior is rational and what isn't.

BTW, as for rational:

dcorban wrote:

My entered snipe bids are often far higher than the final price.

Then they're quite ineffective, aren't they? If they are higher than the final price, they were obviously entered after the auction was closed already. Otherwise the final price would have been at least as high as your bid :)

Sometimes it can take months, even a year or more to hammer out all the little things you missed that playtesters punch holes through.

See who else he has represented. Last I had heard, Hasbro and some of the other big companies were forcing new submissions through the equivalent of a pay-to-use temp agency. You had to pay them upwards of 200$ per game submitted, per company, per attempt from what others that have tried it have said.

Not trying to scare you off here. Just pointing out the things you need to keep in mind as you wade into the deep end of the gaming biz pool.

At the Gamer's Grind we started a freeplay abstract game night that comes up every other Wednessday to try to bring players that enjoy those kinds of games together. By freeplay I mean we wave our cover charge for access to our wall of games on that day for abstract games. The link at the bottom should take you to some examples of what types of games we are talking about.

But the question is what games do you enjoy but you have a hard time finding fellow players for. Arkham horror is a name that keeps popping up. I want to start specific game nights for specific types of games and I am trying to find specific games that need that kind of assistance

I appologize for the long link below. It should take you to our abstract games we have available to play currently

http://boardgamegeek.com/search/boardgame?sort=title&advsear...

One which I found very interesting (although not exactly a reference book) was Do Not Pass Go by Tim Moore. It's based on the London board and has some fascinating history and a great, well written read.

I don't have any experience from using it last year although I'm putting in things this year.

A friend of mine used it last but only put items in the silent auction. He said things went smooth and felt he got fair prices. Last year the silent auction was on Thursday while this year it is on Friday which should be a better as more people come on Fridays than Thursdays. The live auction was on Friday last year but has been moved to the prime day of Saturday this year.

I'm personally putting all but two OOP items (McMulti and Giganten) in the silent auction.

All of the details can be found at http://www.originsgamefair.com/OriginsAuction/tabid/3098/Def...

I would strongly suggest filling out all of the auction sheets, tags and bidding sheets now and getting a seller number from them before you get to the show.

Thread: Recommendations:: Fantastic 2-Player Games?

by LilligantEX

	Hi all!

I've never been massively into board games, just played them with friends from time to time. Anyway, I have been massively keen on getting Dixit, but as it's a 3-player minimum, that means I wouldn't be able to play it all that often.

Anyway, I'm looking for some creative or word-focused games for 2-players that are good. Or, alternatively, any really awesome minimum 2-player game.

Thanks for any suggestions!
