An ash I know, Yggdrasil its name. With water white is the great tree wet; thence come the dews that fall in the dales. Green by Urth's well does it ever grow.

DOH... that is really freaking hilarious. I know I have the answer now.

Thanks for the heads-up two posts ago. It is hilarious when you are working on something which is so wrong, and coming up with humorous results.

Now I see the error, and what fits it.

i could see that. maybe chimney sweep --> washboard or something? washboards kinda require sweeping your hand across the board don't they? i must be getting tired but i don't feel tired.

Thanks for the Google suggestion on the kitchen slicer -- new to me. I've skimmed the Wiki article on the arithmetic postulates fellow, but I still don't grok "two out of five." Anybody?

Just try to pronounce his last name and see what you come up with. ("Two out of five" is more of a thing to "cement" that you have the answer once you've found it--there are a specific five of them.)

You don't need all of them to solve. Several people, including myself, used a crossword solver to get it. Email me what you have so far and I will help.

OK, it's been almost 90 minutes, and I'm dying to salt my own puzzle. So...

1. Minor spoiler regarding the license plates.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
You MUST order the plates correctly. The numbers were a completely accidental red herring. The backdrop is not. Sing the song.

2. MASSIVE SPOILER explaining the theme:

Spoiler (click to reveal)
All answers have three things in common:
a)Film character b)with at least one partner c)from a movie featuring a road trip. (It's a road puzzle.)

Hints for the clues most people are missing:

Spoiler (click to reveal)
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas and a half a pack of cigarettes. It's dark out, and we're wearing sunglasses.

I hate Illinois Nazis.

We're on a mission from God.

We thought you was a toad!

I work for no man.

Gopher, Everett?

(EDITED the last spoiler. It's 106, not 104. Helps when you're googling.)

I've got the clues, but I have no idea what goes where.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
I *thought* it was where they took place, but several don't fit. So then I just started grasping for straws like where the actor was from on one. None of the salt has done me any good either. HELP!

Nevermind, I got it.

The clues are already in order. You only need to figure out the order of the license plates.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
yeah, I finally figured that out.

Originally (and I don't know if this was a purposeful red herring, I was going with the logic of:

Clyde - Missouri - that's where he was killed
Thelma - Arizona - Ends at the Grand Canyon
Snowman - California - Story takes place there

etc

finally clued in to what the background meant.

Well, one of the answers is also a town in one of the states, so I followed that dead end for an embarrassingly long time.

No, that was a complete accident, like people ordering by the numbers on the plates. It just turns out that

Spoiler (click to reveal)
a lot of movies that have long road trips happen to take place in states where Route 66 runs through. Heck, Jake would have fit that answer, too, if I had included the actual origin of Route 66. Kumar, on the other hand - no way that one was even close. That's all New England.

PB - the song is Route 66. You know, 'Get your kicks, on Route 66.'

And yes, Bonnie goes with Clyde, and Louise with Thelma.

I'm sure sometime in my life i've heard the song, but I've found the lyrics online and there's no tune in the rolodex in my head.
That's okay though, I've got the answer!

Thanks!
