I went to a Meetup.com Board Game meet yesterday at the Barnes & Noble cafe with my girlfriend, and as we were quietly arguing over what to play (not Apples to Apples, please) we were invited to join in a game of Munchkin, or as it turned out Super Munchkin. Plus the expansion and maybe some extra Blender cards too. There were a lot of cards.
There were four people that had played before teaching us the rules, which made sense after a hand or two. I happened to draw a pretty bad starting hand, which took a long time to overcome. The cards were funny, and the game was good when you were actually playing, but it seemed like twenty minutes would go by while other people were adding up points and adding in cards to the battle.
After about two and a half hours, I was ready for the game to be over, and since three of us had nine points with one battle away from winning, I decided if I didn't win this round, I'd help the next guy win just to end it. I'm sure someone could have throw out some other batch of cards to keep it going, but they didn't, and it was over.
We both liked the game, and had a good time, but it did tend to drag at the end, and it may have been better with some house rules to limit the number of turns. We kept score with ten sided dice, maybe a d20 as a timer for number of rounds might work.

Yes, all the Munchkins tend to get very long, as players battle back and forth for that one last point. It seems (in our group at least) that everyone holds back their really nasty cards until the very last moment, and then whichever player gets to 9 first loses horribly. The second player to 9 then wins handily, since everyone else has spent their smiting cards.
Having new players seems to slow the game too. But of all the games I've played (a good number), there were ALWAYS new players.

A standard game of Munchkin without expansions can take long enough. I can't even imagine a three-hour game ... although I've read several session reports here and heard other accounts from people about such long games. Much as I like Munchkin, it's really the type of game that should only take 45 minutes at most to play. After that, it starts to wear thin.

I played a four person game a few weeks ago. 1.5 hours was session length and that included teaching the game. I really don't think you'd be able to get the game length down any lower than an hour. I love the game, for about 75 minutes, then i'm ready to move on to something else. My hopes are that some of the other munchkins (star or fu) are a little more streamlined than this one. I think the power rank mechanic adds to much to the mix here in this version.
