Finally we held the gravel race on Easter Island, or Die Oster Insel as the Germans call it. This Leo Colovini/Alex Randolph game was another of Ward's Essen snags and another new game for us though it's been around since 1994. We raced big Easter Island head statues up a board and back, the "gravel" coming in because there was a bag of literal gravel, and when you made a move for a certain number of spaces, you had to put that many rocks into the other players' statue heads. (Yes, this is a game for people who have rocks in their heads.) Alternatively you could put the rocks in your own head and move somebody else's statue, which might be a useful move since at the end of the game the race would be won by the player, among those who had finished first in the race or tied for second, who had the most rocks in his head. This was a rather silly exercise, but we entered into the spirit of the thing and with a soupçon of strategy (pouring all the gravel on my final turn into the statue I predicted would finish last, which was Ward's) I tied for second in the race and claimed the game 28 rocks to 25 each for Ken and Jack.
