We have 5 new players (though we are experienced gamers). How suitable would the Ruhr map be, using the Standard rules? Is it very tight for 5? Indeed, would our better choice be Railroad Tycoon?
Many thanks in advance.

5 players is 'tight' in itself because of how the auctions and distribution of auctioned actions will work out. The map is very open though, with few terrain difficulties, so you won't run into a lot of trouble here (other than people connecting earlier to good cities, and pilfering resources before you can recuperate the investment of laying down track to get there in the first place). Near the end it might get a bit more complicated as you will have to weigh pros and cons of crossing the mountainous terrain in order to keep transporting goods from place to place. People tend to stay away from it, though, as the terrain is relatively large and thus expensive to cross.
I suppose it all depends on what you want the game to be like. For an initial go you could revert to the basic rules which make money management much more RT-like, namely to get cash when you need it. But I don't think that would add much of a challenge.
