If several players place cylinders on the backstage deck after the Wager there could be a situation where a player has cylinders left but is unable to use them on those cards that are left when it comes to their turn.

Examples are :

Jeweler left - but no yellow pieces available

Merchant left - but no suitable costume pieces available.

In the base game you can 'retrieve' a cylinder that you bid , which means you reduce the number of Rest tokens required.

Does the same apply to the backstage cards ?

No you don't retrieve cylinders from backstage: they are lost for the turn if you don't have any valid card to use. You don't have rest anyway on backstage cards: all cards are discarded and new are drawn for next turn.

In practice you will see that, if you are careful with turn order and your "auction", you almost never loose cylinders (but sometimes, you will have to rush as first action in backstage, which will help players that focus less this turn on it).

As for Shakespeare base game, timing is key to optimize your cylinders (and win).
