Hi

We played it for the first time and it felt a little bit weird to have 105 cards. Only about 5x7=35 are used. In a 4 player game it's 5x13=65

Is it better to play with less than 5 families in a 2 player game?

My personal thoughts... I think it should be prorated based on number of players. Even at the max of 4 players 105 cards is a bit much. But, at the same token, I think it should remain 5 families for victory point scoring. So, for example, instead of playing with all 21 cards from 5 families, maybe 10-11 cards from 5 families for 2 players and 14-15 cards from 5 families for 3 players.

It will be interesting to see what others purpose.

We are playing 2 player games with 4 families only and it works well for us.
It reduces the number of cards for a level mythos to 4 (instead of 5), but we didn't experience a problem with that.

Speaking of variants, our simplest variant is adding one gaming round (over the official 5) for each player missing up to four players.
That way you see more of the deck. It doesn't even hurt the time competition for family/legend bonuses (it's still first came first served) and you don't need longish preparation with removing duplicate cards off the deck.

But the game runs a lot longer than a very basic setup.

Fair enough. But those are extra minutes spent playing, not spent preparing decks, so still a plus in my book.
Regardless, the beauty of boardgaming is the ease of adapting your rules to your own ideas. :meeple: So whatever suits you or me.

I would also prefer the 2-3 extra rounds. Because 1 round takes about 5min?
