Gotcha!
mb
The card "Mate" states:

"Another Monster joins the combat with the same level and all the enhancements as the current Monster. If the Monsters are defeated, draw Treasure for each and go up levels for each."

If bad stuff is not copied, it seems that the player would suffer no consequences if they failed to run away from the mate specifically.

Well, you don't run away from the Mate specifically. You are -1 to run away from the pair, together. You either get away from the pair, or they both get you, in which case the original Bad Stuff applies. The Bad Stuff is not doubled in any way, except that it is 50% more likely.

Wrong, even under the old rules. The Mate is a separate monster and you must Run Away from it as well as the original. We also removed the -1 penalty -- having to run twice is bad enough.

The Mate's Bad Stuff is the same as the original monster's.

Searching the FAQ more thoroughly that is answer is there in the question about getting rid of one of several monsters. I'll be more careful looking stuff up. My Munchkin set goes way back...
