Love 'em even if a few games get scuttled from time to time.

I eagerly look forward to him describing a high-scoring game as a "point salad" sometime in the near future.

It's always sort of cool to have it demonstrated on occasion that gamers are more than a bunch of nebbishes hiding behind computers. Thank you for the post.

True story. I got into gaming because of Keith.

In a former life, he and I shared an employer. I never met him in person, but it's how I was introduced to his writing. I then began reading his blog, which was about way more than "just" baseball. He read a lot, loved food, and played these weird games with his wife. After a while I caved and bought Carcassonne thanks to a Top 20 Games list he posted on his blog circa late 2009. At the time, a Top 20 seemed absurd to me.

So yeah, he plays. He has an account here, though he's not active.

FYI, he puts together a ranking of his favorites every year on his personal blog. Here's last year's. He's also previously written board game reviews for Paste, but I don't know if he does anymore.

You apparently haven't notice the trend of posting about seeing games on TV shows. It was just a nice random thing to see while looking at a sports article.

The Blue Jays?

I interacted with Keith a few times around the turn of the century: a few times on the usenet group rec.sport.baseball, and he nearly joined the fantasy baseball league I was in but changed his mind when he learned it was a pay league.

Seemed like a good dude. When he got his job with the Blue Jays around that time, he seemed very humble and thankful.

TBH seems appropriate for a baseball guy to be into, considering so much of baseball is math and stats.

I can remember specific interactions with him from usenet in baseball and fantasy baseball. I was surprised when he got a job with Toronto and thought I should too!

That was the early days of wider acceptance of sabermetrics and real analysis of baseball after Bill James screamed at a wall for a couple decades.

Heh. I wish. No, just before that. A lot of people from RSB went to Baseball Prospectus, Keith included. I was not a Smart Baseball Person, but I was behind the scenes at BP from 2004 to 2009.

I just meant that he was writing about games I had never heard of at the time, so they seemed weird to me since I had no context for them. Carcassonne and Jambo and Vikings and whatever else he was playing then. My first few purchases were guided almost wholly by what he enjoyed and recommended.

Huh, what do you know? There's actually a few of us rec.sport.baseball old-timers hanging around on BGG.

I know quite a few of the old RSB'ers from that time now hang out at baseballthinkfactory.org (or at least, the ones who aren't working in MLB!).

Sports media is pretty well half-and-half former players and nerds anymore. I thought the sabermetrics squad at ESPN was going to have a collective meltdown after the Cavs beat the Statistically Greatest Basketball Team Ever.
