to increase the ship variants here are some ideas;

-big battleship/flagship: you can only build them when you reach ascendancy level 3 and cost 2 production each with max 5 that can be built. depending the faction the ship either has a 1 step better shield modifier, 1 step better to hit roll in space battles or better to hit in planetary invasions. it also functions as a flagship which means that i can form its own specific fleet with other ships even when not at a starbase. this fleet could be a mini battlegroup of 4 ships (1 must be the flagship) and allows the ships to reroll rolls of 1 (possibly it would just use the battle group fleet that each race has so the limit of 3 fleets remains). this ship would always be the last to be destroyed as other friendly ships will protect it. other fleet types must still be formed at starbases/homeworld as normal.

-convoy ships: you can build 2 convoys for 1 production and place them directly on available spacelanes linked to your planets. their function is to form the link between planets so you can freely transport resources, otherwise resources would stockpile on the planet that generated them.
you assign 1 convoy to each spacelane between your planets where the ship remains stationary (but it represents the ship going back and forth between the 2 linked planets).
enemy ships can raid the convoy by being assigned raid duty in the sector of the convoy ship (this doesnt require a command but would be the sole action that ship can do for the current turn, at most it can do a single impulse move to move into position first, this move does need a command as normal).
raiding ships roll 1d6, a 5 allows to loot any 1 resource from the linked planets, a 6 both gives 1 resource and kills the cargo ship.
friendly ships can be assigned to escort duty with the convoy which also doesnt need a command but blocks it for the turn. the escorting ship can fire at raiders with 1d6 killing 1 raider on 6.
raid combats only last 1 round as it takes time to search for and attack the convoy ships. resource looting would be limited to 1 or 2 resources per spacelane.
the convoy ships might even be used to trade with the other factions (representing the trade agreements), other factions could raid them to block the trade.

resources that would stockpile on a planet may be looted during an invasion (though 1 resource would be destroyed each time a node is destroyed).

additionally, it could be possible to have independent pirate ships that appear from time to time, their sole purpose to attack convoy ships, and could only be attacked by escorting ships, other ships would be unable to attack them directly.

I've played a fair amount of Twilight Imperium, where every ship has its own stats and costs, and it's WAY more complicated than Ascendancy is trying to be. One of the things that interests me the most about this game is that it's NOT terribly complex in its individual parts. Introducing multiple ship types and micromanagement of resource production wouldn't add anything significant to the enjoyment of the game for me, and would bog down the game with unnecessary minutia.

That said, Twilight Inperium has a lot of that, and if you want that kind of game, I recommend it.

the convoy idea could indeed bog down the game, but the battleships would only make a relative minor difference while adding an interesting option.

the battleships would help to solve the issue of stranded ships, what i mean is that once a fleet is disbanded, the remaining 2 ships often remain there as its not efficient in commands to bring them back to a starbase to form a new fleet, certainly if they are not on an important passageway where they could be picked up by a passing fleet. you could send the battleship to form the fleet and move on from there.

Im hoping this game will give some of the Twilight Imperium feel at a shorter length. We play Twilight Imperium fairly often at 3 players, so Star Trek Ascendancy could be amazing for us.

good to know the ships on the fleet markers are slightly bigger than the other ships and detachable, they would be perfect to function as battleships/flagships.
