Ten patrols with a type VIIB, the last of which resulted in 8 combat rounds of sustaining a royal pummeling from a vengeful escort. (must have been captained by Johnnie Walker himself).

Round:

1- 3 hits: Hull, Dls Eng #1, Rear Torp Door
2- 4 hits: Hull, Batteries, Minor Damage, Hull
3- 3 hits: Flooding, Minor Damage, Dive Planes
4- 2 hits: Flooding (+1), Deck Gun
5- 1 hit: Flooding (*2)
6- 3 hits: Periscope, Dls Eng #2, Minor Damage
7- 3 hits: Flooding (*2), Crew(LW), Hydrophone
8- 2 hits: Engineer, Crew (LW)rep

With the boat on verge of drowning, mercifully the escorts decided the Germans had enough, and gave up the pursuit. The boys repaired one of the diesels and the sub limped home, bloody and battered. Alas, U-77 was deemed unfit for further combat duties and was pulled from frontline service, replaced by a brand-new type VIIC. The war continues!

Wow, 21 hits from one encounter ! You were lucky to receive 'minor damage' three times. And quite lucky to limp away.

Yes indeed! One more 'flooding' hit would have ended the story. I doubt they would have survived another volley.

The closest I ever came to something like this was a similar pummeling where I just could not get away and either one more flooding or one more hull hit would have done me in, all of my torpedo ports were damaged, and I had a lot of damage all over the ship. I snuck away on a really lucky roll where the escorts lost me (or thought I was done for or had escaped).

It can get tense sometimes...

Very cool result. Nice balance between bad luck and good luck. 2.6 hits per round is pretty high.

My personal best with Type VIIB was 7 rounds and 14 hits survived. I used to play rather safe.

(The most extreme Type VIIB's ED/DC Cycle I have ever seen was one of the computer simulation results (one out of several hundred thousands of cases) - 49 hits taken and an escape after the 17th combat round. But as the result was a consequence of insane risk taking and has a tiny occurrence chance, it's more like a theoretically interesting limit figure and probably not something to encounter IRL. Surviving 21 hits during a cycle in actual play is crazy enough.)
