Part of me is excited, while another part of me is ambivalent.

Have the Olympic Games lost their luster? Or are there events and/or athletes that will continue to shine over the next 2 weeks?

Are there specific events you are looking forward to?

The doping scandals that seemingly take place every four years have contributed to the Olympics losing their luster for sure. But the fact that they are in Brazil, coupled with the stories of corruption and security issues, has me morbidly curious to see what transpires. I doubt I will watch any events, but I will check the sports news to see if anything exciting has happened and then watch those highlights.

I'm hoping the US badminton team can take a medal this year, they've never done so before.

That's right...badminton is an Olympic sport.

Badminton ferchristsake!

I love the Olympics and I sure this will be no exception. Especially looking forward to the "weird" events like badminton, table tennis, kayaking, archery, water polo, etc.

It'll be nice to be in a nearby timezone.

I completely agree the Olympics could be done MUCH better in so many ways. It's kind of heartbreaking. I guess I'm part of the problem if I watch no matter what.

I really only pay attention to the team sports, like soccer, basketball and volleyball.

I've come to the conclusion that the modern spectacle Olympiads have become are best hosted by first world nations. The burden on lesser nations to rapidly modernize their infrastructure and to construct adequate venues for such an event has repeatedly caused economic havoc on the host nations in the games' aftermath.

I don't mean the athletes, necessarily.

Yes I fully agree.

I love me some Olympics. And every two years I drink the Kool Aid about global friendships, and cooperation, and all the little heartfelt stories. (Although the US coverage and Bob Costas make me gag.)

But the strain on any hosting nation is ridiculous and the stuff going on in Brasil is pretty nauseating.

With the Court for the Arbitration of Sport overturning the bans on Russian athletes, these games are going to have a cloud of controversy with every medal won for Putin's glory. CAS just made a mockery of the Olympic ideals by effectively ruling that winning is more important than fair play.

I might be a tiny bit biased

But I liked that it was unashamed Brazilian. I feared that it would pander too much to the american/european public, that it would have US celebrities... Jennifer Lopes singing a theme song, Antonio Banderas singing the anathem or things like that.
But it was Brazil all the way, and I loved that.

( How many celebrities did non-brazilians recognize? I would guess Bundchen and no one else )

Agreed. International sport, at just about every level, is the same. One look at the F1 schedule is proof enough.

I wonder what the bikini does to improve athletic performance. Can't they just wear a tank top and some board shorts?
