I made up this tower in Tinkercad as a replacement for the cardboard.

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1698143

The sides have some clear spots for additional torches or banners if you want to add them to look more like the games.

With Portcullis

Top only for low profile gaming - 4cm high

Low PLA version for quick printing.

Added another to the Thingiverse page - New tower model now contains a Portcullis.
Took me around 6 hours to print.

Love it. Some people were asking for just this during Gen Con.

If you are going to be at the September LA Strategicon event I will bring you one.
Working on adding in the banners and torches to it as well.

Also was thinking about the design. How about a variant that's just the top section? It would be cheaper to print and also less issues with obscuring the board.

Any chance you would sell 3-4 and ship them in the US?

Sounds good. I can do that for you.
I will cut one down and add it to my Thingiverse page.

I am getting 5 done for myself and once I get all of them made I can get a better idea of the total time it takes and how much PLA it takes up to make these.

I have made them all in Grey so they a castle stone look to them that makes it easier to add shadowing to for those who can paint well.

I do have orders for boardgames on my 3dhubs.com site. I have not priced these out yet in the 3dhubs system but if you download the stl files you can either put them into my own queue or a local one to get an idea on pricing. These do take around 6 hours to print for me. I am using a single head Makerbot 2.

It is usually best to do it from a local printer as then you can pick up rather then ship. I do like the extra work though and you can get my link by hovering over my avatar.

Cool! I was thinking maybe the first 4 brick layers before it tapers in might work as a short version.

Hey Martin, I played around with your model to make a shorter version that prints cheaper. I also cut out a bit of the bottom to use less materials. The cost is $19.49 on Shapeways. Did a test print and will see how it turns out.

One issue I noticed is 3 hero/hireable tokens wouldn't fit inside unless they overlap. But should work great with miniatures. I'm debating about picking up the minis though I'm sad that one of them is sold out.

I had a heck of a time importing the STL file into Max but a friend told me about netfabb which worked great. I was able to import there, export as OBJ. Then bring into Max for editing. The back into netfabb to fix some holes.

Looks great.

I just uploaded a new version to Thingivers that looks like wood so I now have a full version for stone or wood.

Netfabb is great, I use it all the time for cutting and fixing holes.

I thought I had it matched to the paper model so the same amount of tokens should have been able to fit. Might have to adjust the size just slightly.

It does match well, but the cardboard version doesn't have thick edging at the top (forget what they are called on a real castle). So that cuts into the place where the tokens go. I don't think it's a big deal, you can have them overlap or hang over the edge some.

Will check out the wood version! Great idea.

I got my 3D printed tower model in! Thanks to Martin DeOlden's wonderful work. I cut down the model to both save printing costs and have it obscure less of the board during play.

As for painting, I used Vallejo primer and Army Painter paints. After priming it, I did a base coat of Ash Grey. Then used Dark Ink wash. Dry brushed Ash Grey and a light dry brush of white. The trapdoor was Leather Brown and Silver which was inked in Soft. Finally 2 coats of Vallejo Satin Clear.

I bought 3/16" felt for the bottom. The same stuff used in protecting wood floors. Cut that into a 2" square piece.

Happy with how it turned out and ordered 3 more. I used the crappiest quality level for printing which actually makes this look better. The roughness of the material makes it look even more like stone.

It was fun to paint but I figure I'll be a bit tired of it by the 4th one!

Thanks John! I got 3 more which I'm painting currently to match. I'll bring them to the next Strategicon so you can see them in person.

I wish they would have a painting primer at Strategicon as I would love to learn how to paint miniatures and terrain.

Compared to figure painting, this one is pretty simple.

The nylon is very porous so a primer is recommended.

After primer, base coated in Ash Grey (Army Painter). Then used ink (Strong- Army Painter). Dry brush Ash Grey. Then a lighter dry brush of white. Finally, two coats of Satin Clearcoat.

Oh, and leather brown and silver for the trapdoor.

That's it! A couple nights of work. Most of it tediously dull compared to a miniature. The first one was fun, the 3 additional ones not so much!
