The Animal Games is a card-based party game for 3-6 players in which players act as animal trainers, selecting one animal to represent them across 3 events that come from different categories (speed, power, endurance, technical and team).

The game revolves around an open discussion as players explain their strategies for how to maximise their animal's performance in a wide-ranging selection of events, from Hide and Seek to the 100m sprint to stacking in a tower, before voting on the other animals' performance to decide the winner.

The New Greatest Show On Earth…

This summer, huge crowds will gather from all over the world to witness the greatest spectacle of our time…

After 8 years of development, game designer Tom Clare is taking to Kickstarter on August 2nd to seek funding for this card-based social game. For a pledge of £14/$20 (plus £6/$9 UK/US shipping), you can bag yourself a copy of the game as well as gaining the opportunity to be personally involved in directing some of the remaining card art (see below).

About the game:

Players take on the role of animal trainers who have the innate ability to communicate with animals of all species. Each player has been invited to take part in the Animal Games, a tournament designed to establish who is the greatest animal trainer in the world.

Three events are selected, each from one of five different event categories. Players must then choose one animal from a selection of seven to represent them across all three of those events. Their selected animal will then compete against the animals chosen by their rivals, playing out each event in turn by a process of discussion and voting. Whoever gets the most voting points wins!

Be an art director:

Backers will be encouraged to suggest new events in the project comments and the suggestions with the most support will be put to regular backer polls during the project to find out which will be included in the game. The backer suggesting the event will then get the chance to direct the art for that event card, explaining to the game artist how they see the art in their mind’s eye. They will also get their name on every copy of the card for good measure. There will also be the chance for some backers to direct the art for some of the animal cards.

So if you’re intrigued by the idea of a giraffe playing hide and seek, tickled by the thought of an octopus slowly flopping over the edge of the 10m diving board, or inspired by the challenge of how best to stack rhinos in a tower, then be sure to check out the Kickstarter on August 2nd.

Number of players: 3-6
Time to play: 20-30 minutes
Recommended age: 8+

Thanks Sharon!

I'll be sending you a message on Kickstarter, but thanks for your support!

It's not quite been the start we'd hoped for and we may cancel before the week's up if we don't take a rapid upturn this week (we're going for some more online coverage in the coming days).

Don't worry, though, we'll get this game out in the end no matter what it takes!

Tom
