100 million?
How much would you pay?
Should we have paid?
I thought this was the kind of thing we didn't do.

We didn't pay anything. The $400 million was Iranian assets frozen in 1979 that is now being returned to them as per the agreement in January. This isn't new information, as it was discussed in way back January.

So I guess zero is how much we should have paid, because that is what we paid.

Sounds high - I think health economists use $50,000 per quality-adjusted life year (QALY), which would give a kid's life a value of $4 million but a 40 year olds somewhat less than $2 million.

Quote:
So in this monetized world we live in, what's the going rate? At least in the United States, "the value of a statistical life turns out to be around $5 million," Mueller told Life's Little Mysteries, a sister site to LiveScience. If a safety code will cost more than $5 million for every person it will save, "regulators eyes start to glaze over. They say that that is too expensive."

I think your value is more applicable to lawsuits when people die. I'm familiar with the 2 million dollar figure but that seems old (like over a decade old) so I would expect it to be higher today.

In an extortion case like this, I would vote for $0 in cash, or $billions in munitions expended.

Why? Because when you pay individuals, groups, or even governments for kidnapping, you get this:

As has been said, you stole it from them, and are just returning it.

Oh Steven, Steven, Steven...

This is America. If we had actually STOLEN the money, we would have already spent it on cheeseburgers, weak beer, NASCAR, and real football games (you know, where the players wear pads). Since the money is still around, it's obvious we didn't steal it.

Seriously, the money was frozen by the US and almost all of the western industrialized world to punish Iran for misdeeds. No stealing involved.

I suppose technically you are correct, as you did not intend to keep it forever.

Thanks for the rent-free space in your head. Would have been nice if you'd cleaned it up a bit before you rented it out, though.

This thread needs a more descriptive subject header.

Obama paid ransom money for Iranian hostages, hid it from Congress, and now Iran is taking more hostages, because they got the message that we'll do that.

And a few hundred million to a terrorist state will result in a lot of deaths. And all that is on Obama's head.

The Iranian press called it ransom money.

If it was returning their own money why an unmarked plane in the dead of night in hard currency, instead of a wire transfer?

Source?

Also maybe the Iranians do not trust you except in hard cash? After all it wouild not be the frost time you (as a nation) refused to pay up money you promised.

It's not worthwhile even making fun of the reliability of the Iranian press.

But putting the various claims aside, do you honestly think the US government would pay 400 million (with 1.3 billion to come) to a virtual enemy for half a dozen random citizens? It would be almost pleasant to think it could be that altruistic.
