I'm hoping to play Imperial for the first time tonight, but I wanted to confirm one rule: when a nation moves more than three spaces along the rondel, can the money spent come from the nation's treasury or only from the controlling player? (I read the rules as the money comes from the controlling player's stash, but confirmation would be helpful.)

And how long should I expect a first game to last?

Thanks!

Moving more than 3 spaces comes from the individual player's funds. As far as how long will a first game take, well ...
(1) Base 120 minutes
(2) If rules need to be covered then add 30 minutes
(3) Add 15 minutes per player over two to cover in group deal making/tactics discussions/potential rules clarifications
(4) Add/subtract 10 minutes for each player that either suffers from analysis paralysis or is a fast player

Just my thoughts, your mileage may vary.

Yes, the controlling player pays the money. Playing time varies widely based on player experience, player counts and playing style. If I remember correctly, my first game with 4 players, 2 newbies and 2 experienced took us about 3 hours.

Thanks so much! The rules answer and time estimates are helpful. (We'll have four tonight, and I hope we can move at a decent clip.)

It also depends on play style. Imperial is not a wargame, but some people play it as one. This does make the game take longer.

Yeah, read everyone this post, because it will take longer if people lose focus on winning, which is easy to do when "your" guys are attacked.

Thanks, everyone, for your help. First game went great. With rules explanation, it took about three hours and fifteen minutes. Of course, then we had to debrief for another half hour...
