Where is that defined, what does it mean? two shots or 2X stars on the block?
What do they hit on?

4.2.2 page 8

The white stars are outlined in black.
Circles and Stars on units so outlined get Double Fire and hit at 5 and 6.

Yes according to the asterisk at 4.2.2 about HQ's.

And 4.2.3 sez their number of stars is also their Command Range.

And 4.2.6 Artillery firing.

PS: Hopefully Manny will chime in to confer/concur since I'm just about to start playing for the first time.

its cool. I got it.

Well first off bringing in Reinforcements turn 1 is looking like a bad choice.
Unless you can force the Soviets to activate or PASS.
[in my game the soviets are facing losing a HQ so they might pass here..]

Since they only have two HQ (NOT THREE), they are spread out and many units cannot activate at all! This means allowing Soviets the chance to bring 12 new units on board and possibly more HQ is a BAD IDEA!

Think I'm gunna reset.

That's what's great about gaming...resetting at a drop of the hat or army!
Thank God that never occurred in real life!
My very first game of BARBAROSSA, by SPI, I was deep into a game and just decided to rearrange the front lines by just moving units by hand...then I started reading about real wars and stuff!

Not sure of the point. I'm learning the game. LEarning by doing it wrong is indeed one way to learn. I prefer to learn by doing it right so that when I play either opposed or try to teach someone I can be of useful assistance.
I have about 10-15 hr for this game to decide what I expect from it and if it is what I hoped it would be.

So I'd like to get thru a full game largely unscathed with major fuck ups rule wise or major play approaches as this appears to be a puzzle game versus a strategy game.

"puzzle game" equals Eurotrash

"Strategy game" equals Ameratrash.

Kev I meant to say that when I was young I didn't understand real life wars and playing that game I found it was/is not so easy in real life to just "pick-up" whole units/ armies and replace them elsewheres.

No.
John Hill made many fine puzzle games. There is a historical lesson to be learned. Once you learn it you move and to the next game.
By Strategy game I mean a game that has a longer shelf life and encourages the exploration of different strategies to win, whereas a puzzle game may only have one or two viable approaches.

I dont know for sure this is a puzzle game, and there is nothing wrong with it if it is. Regardless still trying to play it mostly correctly versus just dumb ass wrong.

The rules are deceptively simple but you better be sure to understand their application.
