Goblet Gobblers
MFG: Blue Orange Games
#of Players: 2
Age Range: 5+

Overall Construction: This game is mostly an all wood constructed game. You have 4 interlocking wood beams which make up the board itself. Each of the 2 teams is made up of a total of 6 nesting “turkeys”? The turkeys have little felt head feathers glued and pinned on top of them. They have very fun artwork on them, to help appeal to smaller children.

Although the wood should hold up for a very long time, the felt feathers may be the only thing about this game to not hold up in the long run.

Gameplay: Gobblet Gobblers is a fun little strategy game. It is played very much like Tic-Tac-Toe, but with the added strategy of being able to capture your opponent’s pieces.

You start off by placing the interlocking wood beams to create your standard Tic-Tac-Toe board. Each player takes their pieces. Players may take a square or capture the square if they have a legal move. A large piece can capture the medium & small pieces. The medium piece can capture the small, but not the large. The small piece is all alone and can’t capture anyone. Players play pieces or capture pieces until one of them get 3 in a row.

I didn’t see anything about not being able to move your larger pieces from a captured piece to another piece, we have allowed people to do so. I will say that if you try to play using this strategy, be careful. It is possible to accidentally free a piece and cause the other player to win.

Yes/No Recommend: Blue Orange has successfully integrated the Russian Nesting Doll into a wonderful game mechanic. We really like how this game took something as basic as Tic-Tac-Toe and gave it life again by adding this new mechanic.

Realistically you could just play this just like regular Tic-Tac-Toe if you want. Use it to teach your wee ones their first strategy game and with the quality of the pieces, maybe they will use it to teach their wee ones as well.

Where To Get It: This game has been out for a little while so you should be able to get it at your local game/hobby shop. I can’t say that I’ve seen this in any of the local Big Box stores.
