It is my intention to write a brief review (around 300 words) of every game that I play over the coming months. It won't quite be a random sample of games but there is likely to be quite a range; some will be games that I've played many times before, others will be first impressions of games that are new to me, some I will like, some I will hate, some I may be predisposed to like or hate before I even sit down to them. I make no apologies for this but I will lead with a rough number of plays and my rating.

Plays: 2 (with 6 players)
My rating: 8

(A review to the tune of The Major-General's Song)

I'm really quite enamoured of this Quartermaster General,
I tend to find, for me, a coop game is quite untenable,
But QMG in teams of three, with six (the highest player count),
Provides, I find collaboration in just quite the right amount.
For Allied or for Axis teams success needs co-efficiency,
But there's no chance for alpha players to force your complicity,
Because each player has to play the cards which they are dealt by chance,
And can't discuss specifics of them when it comes to making plans.

The balance between individual scoring and your team's success
Is quite well struck and there is always ground your nation can contest,
Though I have sometimes seen one stranded player on a team of three,
Bogg'd down upon the wrong front while their chums conspire to victory,

The combat does not involve chance in terms of output randomness,
It is by no means a game that's completely luck-free none-the-less,
At heart it is a card-game and you have to play the hand you're dealt,
It can be a frustration if you've nothing that will let you build.
Discarding to find basic actions goes some way to mitigate,
Still it may not suit those who find that too much chance can irritate,
But I find this a good decision point; your score decreases when
You're out of cards, so far from costing choices, this increases them.

In short it is an excellent abstraction of an armed conflict,
At least in my experience of games with player counts of six.
So, although on the weighting scale it tends to the ephemeral,
I'm really quite enamoured of this Quartermaster General.

Amazing! How long did it take you to write this? It fits perfectly with the rhythm and it's a very erudite review. A real treasure!

I worked on it, on and off, over a few days - then I accidentally deleted it and had to remember/re-write the whole thing on a train-journey yesterday.

Having had the song running round and round in my head for the best part of a week I'm struggling not to think in that rhythm now!

This is the very model of a modern critical review
And I can tell you honestly my hat, good sir, is doffed to you.
Your rhymes are entertaining and your meter quite impeccable
Yet still you've plumbed the qualities of Quartermaster General.

Superb,

All we need now is a decent singer to record it.
