The stats for all the units seem to be identical between all the different Sins (Acolytes/Abominations/Controllers/Avatars), with the biggest differences coming in the unique abilities from the Acolytes & the Sin chosen (+Sin cards). Haven't gotten any games in yet, but saw some potential pairings right off the bat that take advantage of abilities.

Police + Pride: (Riot Police) [Summon a dead Police to join a non-Ranged Fight (before dice are rolled). If the current Hero is alone, he takes 1 Wound.] + [When a Hero fights alone, ignore 1 Defense.]

Punishes the Heroes for traveling alone, which may force them to always travel in pairs. Not sure if that's always something players do anyways or if it causes them to slow down that way since they're always traveling in pairs.

Could also try another pairing:

Police + Lust: (Vice Squad): [Summon a dead Police to join a non-Ranged Fight (before dice are rolled). If the current Hero is alone, he takes 1 Wound.] + [If any Hero ends their turn in the same Space as one other Hero, both Heroes take 1 Corruption.]

In this way, no matter which way the Heroes travel (alone or in pairs), you're able to get some extra benefit out against them.

Any other pairings people have seen that may work well for the Sin player?

I recall Lang said in an interview that he intended Sins and Acolytes to be randomly selected/paired. You may want to wait to see if the FAITH teams are having an easy time before min-maxing the Sin set up.

As far as choices that are especially good, I imagine the scenario objectives and board tiles in use would also have a big impact on what is most effective.

In that case, are the FAITH teams randomly assigned as well? That'd be odd if you could min-max the Heroes side, but the Sins player is supposed to be randomized.

Semi-randomly. Each player gets to choose part of the team.

So if they work together, sure they might go for a min-maxy team. But as the Sins Player you should point out that they should take characters they want to play.

Actually, the rules specifically state for steps 2 & 3 (Choose Sin and Choose Acolytes), "The Sins Players picks a single Sin to plays as. This can be chosen either directly or randomly." and "The Sins Player chooses either directly or randomly what type of Acolyte will be at his disposal."

Regardless of the interview, he left it open in the Rules to min-max and even specifically encourages it later on in step 6 - Choose Heroes:

"It is recommended that new players pick Heroes that complement each other well to start the game."

Still stands though that Map and Scenario Objectives might influence some of your choice that goes into it.

I personally love the Police + Lust combo. I love winning either way.

It's why I've played Jinteki: Personal Evolution since core in Netrunner.
