If marshall plan in hand i think it's a must do to event it. But if not?
Do you totaly give up Europe, only keep WG and stay worry free about degaulle/suez then only focus in asia/me?
Do you take France sometime? (if yes under what conditions)

I had this game yesterday what is you AR1?

USA+2 i setup 4WG/4It/2Iran

Headline: ME scoring

-redscare
-FYP
-IP war
-AI war
-deco
-destal
-vietnam

USSR headline socialist gouv (-2It, -1WG), coup italy and have 3 inf.

I think i reacted very poorly, if i had to do it again i would 2afga/2paki

I'd quite like to play 1 infl into France at some point, more for access to Algeria and W Germany, should I have to clear it due to blockade. But I think you need to give up on Europe for now (apart from West Germany) and press in Asia.

I would n't bother with Afghanistan and go straight to Pakistan, as you have the extra chance of IP war if USSR coups successfully. You want Defcon lowered as well, so you can play up to Thailand safely, as Vietnam Revolts is likely to be your AR6. You want to space Decol and hold Destal.

So I think I would play FYP for influence (holding back my only 4 op card).

Pakistan 2*/0
West Germany 4*/0

It could be a disaster if USSR coups Pakistan successfully and IP War fails, probably about a 25% chance of a disaster - but I think you need to push in this game when the probabilities are in your favour and you've had a bad start. I guess you could play 3 to Pakistan if you want to reduce the chance of a successful coup.

Or a more conservative option (and what you might do without IP War and a hand with less constraints) is to play 2 to Afghanistan instead of Pakistan and then plan to lower defcon by coupling Iraq next AR, then spread to Thailand and Pakistan, while defcon is 3.

I, too, would like to know how to respond to a successful AR1 Italy coup -- not for OP's specific hand, but in general. I find it a very difficult situation to be in, to the extent that as the Soviets I've begun to favor couping Italy instead of Iran, given standard setups, for most hands. Even without Socialist Governments, I mean. Thanks to Afghanistan and the China Card, you're still far from dead in Western Asia, and you'll usually wind up couping Iran anyway later in the turn, so the difference in the ME is negligible.

So, as the US, what do you do? Certainly you have to take the opportunity to spread into Pakistan/Afghanistan, but beyond that?

Related: as the US getting +2, does it make sense to put 1 into Greece (instead of both into Iran), in part to make an Italy coup less effective? I just saw this for the first time the other day, and it struck me as a good idea, generally.

Place that inluence in Italy instead, it worth 2
Headlining EEU can help to protect Italy if you dont have any strong other card to headline.
