Now that the busy-ness of Gen Con has passed, Plaid Hat Games (more specifically, Kodiak Colby himself!) has had a chance to review the entries and determine the winners! He was so impressed with the entries, he decided to increase from three to five winners, who will all be published in a 5-card BGG promo pack for Dead of Winter: A Crossroads Game! Here are the winning entries:

(Note: Plaid Hat Games will be editing these before final publication, but this was the text submitted)

Boardgames

If a survivor searches at the school or library: Hey guys, look what I found! Let's take these games back home! Seems perfect to lighten up those long, silent evenings. Anybody in for a game of Monopoly?

Option 1

You take the boardgames to the colony. Roll a d6.
On 1, 2 or 3: everyone has a fun, relaxing time while playing a few games. Gain 1 morale.
On 4, 5 or 6: tension rises as people cannot stand their loss and start to argue about rules. Things get out of hand quickly when someone gets accused of cheating, as people get bitter and aggressive. Lose 1 morale.

Option 2

You leave the games where you found them. Nothing happens.

Fourth Wall

If a survivor the player controls is at the colony and there are 1 or more helpless survivors at the colony: Wilson's conspiracy theories are starting to become annoying. His latest one is even crazier than the rest: "Hey man, do you ever feel like we're all just pieces being moved around in some game? If only we could change the rules! Or find our way out!"

Option 1

You sit and listen. It all starts to make sense. Wilson is right! The zombies, your fellow survivors, the supplies you've been finding - it's as if everything follows a set of rules. Hell, even venturing outside is like rolling a die to survive. You spend the night coming to terms with your place in the world.

Lose 1 morale. For the rest of the game, when this survivor moves the player controlling them may set the exposure die to a face of their choosing. Keep this card next to the survivor card as a reminder.

Option 2

"Crazy fool," you mutter to yourself as you walk away. The next morning, Wilson is nowhere to be seen. Was he right? Did he actually escape from the game? Or did he just wander off and get bitten? Either way, things are a lot quieter around here now.

Gain 1 morale and remove a helpless survivor token from the colony.

Damsel Dilemma

If a survivor the player controls and one or more helpless survivors is in the colony: A disheveled young woman limps to the doors of the colony. “Please.” she calls weakly. You look out at her from a cracked window. Her jacket is tattered and her wrists show bruises and rope burn. “Please god, help me,” she whispers and she falls limp against the door and sobs wrack her body. A man with a bandage wrapped around his head approaches and you silence him with a look and a raised finger to your lips.

Option 1

Let her in. You give another glance out the window and determine that the woman is alone. Opening the door a crack, you step outside and help her to her feet. She looks at you with gratitude and begins to tell you a disturbing tale when she sees a familiar face over your shoulder. She pushes away from you. “You.. you’re with them?,” she looks betrayed and attempts to run back out into the cold when you grab her arm. “I’m not. Really. What are you talking about?” She points to the man with the bandage and says that he was with the ones who hurt her. You turn toward him, placing yourself between him and her providing a barrier of protection against the man, His eyes fill with fear. “She’s lying. I’ve never seen her before. I’d never..” His words lose importance as you feel a blade slip beneath your chin and rest on your throat. “You men are all the same. Always looking to rescue the damsel. Idiot. Put the food in the bag.” She kicks a duffel bag to the man with a bandage. Lose all food in the colony food supply.

Option 2

Leave her outside. After another long minute of watching, the man finally speaks up. “What are you waiting for? Let her in.” You turn on the man in a hushed tone. “We don’t know anything about that woman. There is no way she’s been surviving out there alone. She’s a lure. I can feel it.” The man starts to protest. “You don’t have a say here. Go lay back down, unless you want to go out and join her.” The man turns and mutters something under his breath but all you catch is the word ‘gutless’. Lose 1 morale.

The Other Colony

If there are more survivors in play than in the survivor deck and there are at least 4 cards remaining in the survivor deck: Food is growing scarce. Winter is becoming harsh. People are getting desperate. One of the colony's scouting parties returns with an interesting discovery and a grisly proposition. A ragtag group of survivors were spotted in a tumbled-down shelter on the outskirts of town. Nobody knows where they came from or for how long they've been there but they appear weak and disorganised - little use to the colony in their state. However, mouths must be fed.

The player who controls the survivor with the highest influence across all parties makes the final decision

Option 1

Resort to the unthinkable. Remove the entire survivor deck from the game and place 10 food tokens in the colony supply. Lose 2 morale.

Option 2

Safety in numbers. Distribute all survivors in the survivor deck equally among players. A wound token is placed on every second survivor that is dealt while a frostbite token is placed on the others.

Option 3

They won't last in this weather but there's simply no way to accommodate them. Let them be. From now on, at the end of a player's turn, the top 2 cards from the survivor deck are removed from the game.

Sherlock

If the player performs a search at the library: As you go up and down the aisles of books you think about the box you'd found gnawed through last night - half eaten and full of mouse droppings. That was the last box of cookies at the colony...maybe in the whole town. You imagine how good they would have tasted and then jump as your light shines on two yellow eyes peering through the shelves! You reach for a weapon when suddenly the eyes jump down from the shelf and sprint to the end of the aisle - you can see the creature clearly now: it's Sherlock - the library's cat!

If Alexis Gray or Emma Han are at the library: The cat recognizes the familiar face and races to her, circling and rubbing her legs. "Sherlock!" She cries. "What luck. Sherlock is a great mouser!"
Equip this card to Alexis/Emma (if both are at the library, equip to Alexis). During the colony phase, add one food if a character equipped with Sherlock is at the colony. Sherlock is never affected by Sparky when equipped to Alexis or Emma. He may be handed off as described in option one.

If neither Alexis nor Emma are at library: The cat could be the perfect solution to the mouse problem at the colony. Unfortunately, he's looking a bit skittish.

Option 1

He also looks thin. You bet he would come with you if you gave him a pouch of tuna. Players must collectively place one food card in the waste pile without using its effect and equip this card to the character who performed the search. Sherlock may be handed off to another survivor by placing a food card in the waste pile without using it's effect. You do not need to pay a food card to hand off Sherlock to Alexis Gray or Emma Han. During the colony phase, add one food if a character equipped with Sherlock is at the colony. Unless equipped to Alexis or Emma, if Sherlock and Sparky ever share a location, Sherlock flees in terror: remove this card from the game.

Option 2

Maybe you could lure that scrawny feline with some tuna and maybe he'd keep the mice out of the colony's dry goods. But you have better things to do then test those theories. Nothing happens.

In addition to getting their cards printed in the promo pack, the winners will each also receive a shiny new copy of Dead of Winter: The Long Night, courtesy of Plaid Hat Games!

Thanks for all of the great submissions, everyone! We look forward to bringing this new pack to you once it's ready!

Come on guys. Lets be realistic, on a roll of 1 everyone has a good time. on a roll of 2-6 someone flips the table and punches out someone. We all know how monopoly goes.

How about on a roll of 6, someone buys all the houses but refuses to build hotels and that survivor is killed. Gain one morale. How that works is, lose 1 for the death, gain 2 for punishing the survivor who would employ that strategy.
