"When the moment of live ammunition approaches, the moment to which all his professional training has been directed, when the lives of men under him, the issue of the combat, even the fate of a campaign may depend upon his decision at a given moment, what happens inside the heart and vitals of a commander? ” -- B. Tuchman

Be bold, fellow gamers, be bold! Enlist in the 7th iteration of the BPA PBEM Paths of Glory Tournament. The time-proven WBC Historical Scenario will be used; BPA members of all skill and experience levels are welcomed. A new double elimination format will be used so all combatants will get two chances to make it to the finals. All with stout hearts and willing hands should drop GM Tom Gregorio (gregorit@yahoo.com) a note by Monday September 26th. Hostilities will commence on Saturday, October 1st.

See http://www.bitterwoods.net/paths-of-glory-bpa-tourney-page/ for more details.

This looks interesting, but I've never used ACTS or Vassal. Can I look at past game logs somewhere to see how it works? And how long is each play through? And how responsive / what time commitment is required from players?

Hi Steve,

Some background:
* ACTS is an online tool intended to track game activity. Registration is free and the URL is "http://acts.warhorsesim.com/". Modules were developed for various games, including POG, that manage things like the cards and various 'status' indicators for games.
* VASSAL provides a generic engine for the playing of various boardgames. It supports both PBEM and live play for a variety of games. The tool is free for the download and I personally know it works great across both the Mac and PC platforms. To use it you would download the Vassal software and then the modules associated with the game(s) you want to play.

With that in mind, here are some answers to your other questions:

* Historical game logs - Yes, anyone can see all the logs of the ACTS games in progress. It's TREMENDOUSLY useful for getting up to speed on the game as you can see what experienced players are doing. Note that you can't see the cards in their hands nor can you actually directly interact with the players. ACTS games are usually removed after 3 months of inactivity so what you see is generally just the active games. The game titles usually give you a clue as to whether or not this is a 'serious' game and the player names will often inform you as to whether or not you're looking at experienced players playing. This URL will take you to the open ACTS games: http://acts.warhorsesim.com/pog.asp, then click "View Journal" to see the log for that game.

* We try to keep tournament games to 3-4 months. The generic 'pace' we recommend is averaging one card play a day, per player. My own experience is that some player card players can take 20 minutes to think about but most should be on the order of 20 seconds. Some players play MUCH faster and, of course, some players can barely get one card in a week, but tournaments generally enforce and remind as needed so as to reach a game outcome within the designated round timeframe.

Finally: There is no obligation to use Vassal - ACTS is the requirement for an 'authoritative' view of the game. Many folks play these matches without Vassal and it's quite acceptable for one person to use Vassal while his opponent uses custom powerpoint maps to track his mapboard activity. (I'd never recommend the latter, of course.)

Hope that helps!

perhaps you could highlight (here) which of the current POG games on ACTS are between veteran players?

as a complete novice (just getting my head around the rules) - I would be too afraid of embarrassing myself, and polluting the draw.

(although , solo with 'Wargameroom' POG is very informative)

cheers

I wouldn't worry about 'polluting the draw', James, organized events are a great way to learn this game. Wargameroom, IMHO, is tough because there's often a game clock running in 'live matches' which creates some interesting pressure. I strongly encourage you to join in the BPA tournament, the next one won't be until late 2018 or even 2019! The double elimination format will give you at least two chances to play and, if you're a BPA member, the only 'cost' is your time.

As far as experienced players, the POG AREA ratings which provide a relative ranking of players are here: http://wolff.to/area/G_POG.html

That being said, a quick look at the current games going in ACTS reveals a lot of experienced players playing. Having been beaten by both these guys, and knowing their styles, here is one match definitely worth following:

Alex Gregorio vs Stefan Mecay (http://acts.warhorsesim.com/dynamic/journal.asp?id=64729)
*** Alex, a CP specialist, unleashes his "Western Hammer" against the top rated Stefan, who ably defends. ***

Does AREA still exist? I thought it had gone away with Avalon Hill.

AREA still exists - pretty active for some games with diligent GMs, less active for games that don't see a lot of organized play.

Three weeks from now, the GMs and I will be setting up the first round of the tournament. Imagine where you will be, and it will be so. Report to the front! Roll some dice! If you find yourself alone, pushing counters on the map and with no one to play with, do not be troubled. For you forgot to sign up for the POG tournament and you're already out of it!

We're up to sixty folks now after two weeks of recruiting. In four weeks the matches start - join soon or be relegated to just reading about it, wishing you'd enlisted.

We are going into the last week of registration for the tournament, POG fans!

We have 80+ participants at this point, with a broad range of experiences - from multi-tournament winners to folks who've never played PBEM and, in some cases, have only played the game a few times.

It doesn't really matter though - all are welcome, all will get a chance to participate in two rounds. Any disappointment should come NOT from losing a match, it instead should arise from missing this opportunity to play!

Drop me a line promptly if you want in, registration cut-off is 9/26.

Last call - registration for the event ends today. Don't be the POG fan sitting on the sidelines because you couldn't make up your mind.

95 folks are now playing in round 1 which will last until late January.

Should anyone not feel capable of waiting that long to get into round 2 and missed the registration for the first round, reach out to me pronto but you'll need to have your BPA membership lined up.

POG Tournament Update

A month has gone by and action continues apace at the front. The POG Tourney October Update is now available, see link below. Nick Anner watches from the Champions Chair on the sideline while 102 gladiators duke it out in round 1. Latecomers who can play briskly are still coming onboard, those with some trepidation in their hearts can join in on Round 2 at the end of January.

The latest update from the front lines of the BPA POG Tournament. A third of the matches have already been completed but, because this is double elimination, nobody goes home a loser.
