If it contains 4 factions, it will have smash up's 50th faction.

The next expansion is going to rock.

Turning 50 factions hasn't gone unnoticed.

If you want to make a Smash Up Through Time, there's a lot you can do

Mummies, cavemen, knights, samurai, gladiators, world war 1/2, colonial era, mayans, aztecs, some notokyo future thing and like you said mafia and cowboys (I'd be a bit disappointed if they didn't have cowboys it was number one in the 'it's your fault' poll and I think it's the biggest "how they do not have this" omission in the game).

I was trying to think of things associated with 50. Elderly, think Cowboys from spaghetti westerns is great. Mafia and treasure hunters were really just attachments

Per the video, we have at least 3 more sets - and at least 12 more factions - to look forward to. So, who knows what they'll come up with?

Ugh, I've hit heat death with this game. I like it, but there's just too many factions. I think I need to do some pruning -- and right now I'm trying to decide between Cease and Desist or It's Your Fault.

I haven't done it myself but I heard that some people when they get the game they make a randomly chosen pool of X factions that players can pick from. Makes it a less daunting choice I'd imagine.

I've thought about doing something like that -- picking 16 or 24 factions that are the "best of" and only playing with that pool when playing with newbies or even all the time.

we always do this:
Randomly select 8 (2 player), 10 (3 player) or 12 (4 player) factions to put int he middle of the table. Then use the Kickin' it Queensberry rule from the rulebook to draft our factions.

It has the freshness of putting unlikely combinations on the table and leaving obvious combinations off the table, yet still gives every player enough choice to pick his factions.

For us, the game starts at the draft.

This is a really good idea -- better than what my friends tried of just randomly assigning factions to everyone.

Do you use an app to choose the initial pool?

Yes, this one:
http://wolfesoftware.com/factions/
It's a web app, so it works on almost all smartphones and computers.

If you want to take the "analog" route for choosing the initial pool, these have been kept up-to-date: Smash Up Random Faction Cards

Duh, I have my own faction stat cards. They need to be updated for the latest versions, though.

I've been using randomization tokens for faction selection. It helps add to the replay ability and insures that no one will always pick the same two factions every game.
