Poll seems to be linked to the essen geeklist. If I select an answer, then I am directed to the geeklist. Can't finish the poll.

Edit: Working now thanks.

For me it goes

Designer>Publisher>Weight>Art>Mechanics>Theme

With a list this long, if I don't know the designer or Publisher, then the art has to pop to get me to dig deeper.

That is given that I know nothing about the game. Often early opinions by friends or reviewers will have me check something out.

Here is mine.
Mechanic>Weight (presumed)>Designer>Publisher>Art>Theme

My ears perk up for Action Point Allowance, Hand Management, Deck/Pool Building (only if their are other mechanics as well though)

I have no interest (at least at first) in games with:
Memory
Card Drafting
Worker Placement
Dice Rolling
Take That
Player Elimination
Press Your Luck
Set Collection

Games with those mechanics so often disappoint me that there is no reason to consider them until they have been around long enough to get a lot more info.

Memory and Take That mechanics typically kill any interest for me. Cooperative Play is another that I'm typically wary of.

Publisher (because over-priced or poor quality are both turn offs) > Designer > Mechanics > Theme

Memory, Take That, and Player Elimination are turn offs.
Co-ops and Rock-Paper-Scissors are nearly so. Co-ops with a traitor are complete turn offs.

I'm paying attention to publisher, but artwork also helps (simply because there are that many games). Also, it has to play 2. And, it has to sound like a game we'd like, so I guess that's mechanics/theme. Not sure on which is the most important in that though.

Language dependence is a huge turn-off. I rarely play with groups who share a single mother tongue, so anything beyond "some" is usually a no for me.
Anything else comes afterwards.

I missed deduction and bluffing as an option in the answers for game mechanics.

I looked for these as well as they're typically my biggest turn offs.

Good Points. They are not among the listed BGG mechanics so they won't show up in the descriptions of the Essen games.

I love deduction but loathe bluffing so I really wish both were among listed mechanics.

For me (and probably most board gamers in the world, i.e. people who are not BGG members and just play games at home from time to time), player count is the most important. If it doesn't play with 2 players, it's not even worth looking it.

Ditto, except they are my turn ons, along with hidden role and traitor.

Where's resource management when I want to vote against it? Oh of course, these are the wonky BGG defined mechanisms.

Mechanisms are the primary element in attracting me to a game, but I haven't voted on your third and fourth questions. While I've never warmed to deck building and am very tired of worker placement, something original done with either one might still attract me to a game. I have been gaming a long time. I own a lot of good games with a wide variety of mechanisms. My shelves are full. Show me something different.

There are a lot of mechanics that are not part of the BGG official list but would be really helpful.

3 of my favorites are:
Tableau Building
Engine Building
Multiuse cards

Mechanics can be vague and difficult to clearly define so I understand the reluctance to add to the list but it could be helpful.

The "I split, you choose" mechanic always gets me to at least look at a game. I don't know where that falls under the BGG mechanisms list though.

If it can't handle 2 players, I won't even give it another glance.
My interest is peaked for deck/pool building, and for great art.
Otherwise, I'll just wait till there are video reviews/playthroughs out in the wild.

If this was just games in general I would have answered mechanisms first but since we are talking about new games, which I don't ever buy, I picked designer since I will always take a peak at something new from a designer I have liked in the past.

I don't understand being interested in a specific publisher but maybe that's more for a certain type of game I don't play much.
