If these two cards do not have their FRIENDS partnering card, do they score anything at all? It seems as if their value would be zero if their FRIENDS card is not in play and face-up.

Those types of cards score * times 3, where * is the number of the corresponding friend cards.
That's it. There are no other rules linked to this. No exceptions to the rule or whathaveyous.

So if you have zero related friend card, you would multiply 3 by 0... which would result in zero points.
Or in other words, if you have zero elven warriors, all your bards are going to be worth zero points.

It's free if you play only the basic game, then a few bucks to play the advanced cards, and yet a few more bucks if you play with the latest 10 extra cards.
