The Great Game by P.Hopkirk

And Flashman in the Great Game by George MacDonald Fraser - fiction but highly entertaining.

The best book for popular consumption is Dalrymple's Return of a King. It's one of hte few that's not eurocentric either in its narrative perspective or its research.

Flashman at the Charge becomes another Great Game story. While it begins with the Crimean War, it eventually takes Flashy to

Central Asia where he meets his Russian adversary Count Ignatieff. Ignatieff is even scarier than Otto von Bismarck in Royal Flash

A bit on the outskirts of the area but Foreign Devils on the Silk Road by Hopkirk is quite interesting too.

I'm most of the way through Hopkirk's The Great Game and it does read well, but seems pretty Britain-centric.

I have Dalrymple's book on the shelf next, and a couple others, will report as I finish them.

I ordered Return of a King. Especially the use of (also) Afghan sources makes me look forward to it. The Great Game has always interested me and Pax Pamir seems to depict the atmosphere well. I have not played the game yet but one concern may be that you can only use spies in the corresponding regime - it may be very quiet on the spy Front?

By the way I own the complete Flashman series and will read the Charge later, as I have not read them all yet (Fortunately so!).

Searched youtube for documentaries on the subject but these seem to cover modern history. Any ideas?

You can use special actions during any regime, BUT if you use them during their matching regime they don't count against your two actions.

I have not watched this one yet, but from its description it covers more centuries of history, 19th and later:

Part 2

Afghanistan: The Great Game is also on Netflix currently. Part one is related to Pax Pamir's era, part two is more modern.
