When green is all there is to be, it could make you wonder why. But why wonder? I'm green, and it'll do fine: it's beautiful, and I think it's what I want to be.

Sad news from the world of Pure Imagination.

I guess that means I'm now the only living Willy Wonka.

This is very sad news . He has been responsible for some much loved characters through his own way.

Also I think he is one of the few people that did sarcasm .. Nicely.

Which is one reason why his Willy Wonka was so terrifying to me as a kid. I guess Dahl thought Wilder was too "soft" for Wonka and wanted more edge to him. But, to me (and in retrospect) the fact that Wilder could act both nice and mean in the the same sentence really creeped me out.

A true one of a kind.

Oh noes!

A lot of the RIPs in Chit Chat are just "news of the day", but this one genuinely saddens me.

I like a lot of his movies, which truly are some of the best films ever, but Silver Streak is my favorite, and the running gag

Spoiler (click to reveal)
of him getting repeatedly knocked off the train

He was one of my favorite all time actors. Blazing Saddles is one of my favorite movies.

One movie that he was in, that I think is really quite good, is The Frisco Kid, with Harrison Ford.

There is a road, no simple highway, between the dawn and the dark of night, and if you go no one may follow, that path is for your steps alone. Ripple in still water, when there is no pebble tossed, nor wind to blow.

I was a big Gene Wilder fan until he made those dreadful movies with Richard Pryor . . . then I started losing interest. But he was in some very funny movies.

I think that all right-thinking people in this country are sick and tired of being told that ordinary, decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am.

I always thought that Wilder and Brooks together made really funny movies, but when they worked seperately, they weren't as good. I think they needed to bounce ideas off each other so bad ones got filtered out and good ones got enhanced.

After seeing the Johnny Depp version of Willy Wonka, I tried to re-watch Gene Wilder's, but it no longer worked for me. Depp's was much closer to the original book (apart from the backstory of Willy's childhood), which is surprisingly dark for children's literature. Even the lyrics for the Oompa-Loompa songs in Depp's version were trimmed down from the lyrics in Dahl's book. Now Wilder's version just seems silly, although it has the charm of nostalgia to help it.

One Wilder movie that bombed at the box office, but I kinda liked was Haunted Honeymoon (1986), which I think was the third and final movie he and Gilda did together. I also recall seeing The World's Greatest Lover (1977) and The Woman in Red (1984). (For years when I was single I had the poster for "The World's Greatest Lover" over the head of my bed.)

Gene also had a part in one segment of Woody Allen's Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex * But Were Afraid to Ask. He plays a man who finds a little too much comfort in his wife's lambs wool sweater, and goes down a dark -- yet funny -- path.

Gene Wilder was an actor who found his niche early and made it work for him. He will be missed.

I was very sad to hear this news yesterday. I was watching Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory just this past weekend. Gene was one of the best actors of our time, IMO, and he will be greatly missed by our family.

I see this, and I find it a little sad. Gene Wilder had a wife, and they have been married for 25 years, and she went through the good times and bad.

Gilda was his third wife, so really not his first true love.

Kind sad seeing this statement all over FB.
