Subject: where to buy tasteful table mat? rss

Hey gang, I need some help here.

I'd like to buy a 6' long table mat (mouse pad type material), but all of the images I've found so far are geared toward adolescent males (women being portrayed as sex objects, for instance).

Is there anywhere I can pick up a table mat that's either a tasteful scene (e.g., nature, space, moon, abstract, etc.) or simply a solid color?

I've already checked most of the major online retailers and my FLGS is no help at all.

Thanks in advance guys!

You can even design your own (or choose from many options) here: http://www.inkedgaming.com
I designed my own there once, amazing quality. You can pay a little bit more and they will do all Photoshop work needed for you, just based on your requests.

One that I know of is http://www.tinywargames.co.uk. They make both cloth and rubber mats. I haven't used any of their products, so I can't comment.

If you decide that cloth is OK, there are a number of mat vendors out there. I own a mat from Hotz Mats. The advantage of cloth mats is that you can put terrain under the mat. So for example, if you're fighting a battle in snow and your hills are all green (as mine are), you can hide them from view.

Check this site, but only look at the Pro Matz. Not exactly cheap, but high quality with a variety of styles.

I have a 6x4 Tinywargames rubber mat and it is very much like the material of a mouse pad. Excellent quality. However, I believe they only ship cloth mats world wide and rubber mats only in the UK but you could email them.

I now buy Adventuridge interlocking floor mats (green or blue) which combine beautifully to make a 5x5 mat of 1cm thickness. They are imo brilliant for gaming and are dirt cheap from Aldi UK at £12.99. I understand they are available at Aldi.US for $19.99 but unsure if these are the same. They are a hardwearing compressed rubbery foam and it is impossible to see they are made up of 6 interlocking panels as the join is tight and invisible.

These are the guys I went with. Got a nice star map style game mat. The surface is felt-like and seems like it'll hold up well. The underside is a rubber mat that grips the table nicely.

Thanks guys for all your help!

============

Addendum: FYI the mat had a very strong odor not entirely unlike old burnt popcorn waste heaped in a derelict theatre. So, we had to air it out over several days outside in bright sunlight. After about a week of such treatment the mat no longer was off-gassing and smelled ever-so-slightly like the interior of a new car. To us this was not a problem, but I wanted to mention it nevertheless.

I ordered one of the ProMatz 4' x 6' terrain maps for playing a medieval miniatures game called Saga and it is just perfect with more detail than shows in the pics on the website. It has also held up great - no complaints.

4' x 6' is a bit big for 28mm minis, but some are mounted and it works out very well with some additional 3D surface features that you can build or buy.

Anyway, thanks for the GG. Have fun...
