From reading various posts here, I can tell you that there are a few very substantial differences, yes. As far as what they are:

Different ending rules -- French ties in some situations where English does not.

I think a difference in the use of Temple of Zeus was mentioned.

These were the 2 that I recall, but I believe there were others. I'm sorry that I didn't pay too much attention at the time I read them. Hopefully, others will remember better!

Apparently there are several differences. One being discussed right now on another thread is a difference on when conversion of province control occurs and I believe someone else noted a difference in victory conditions. So I do believe there are several differences but don't know if they are summarized anywhere.

No difference in components other than the rulebook, which you can download off the Academy Games website.

The Author, Serge Laget, is French and I would stick to the french version or FAQ (the rules of the new edition have been developped by Serge Laget and Asyncron, the french editor).
I have nether seen the english rulebook, but I am sure the Author is in favor of a possible tie in the construction phase : if the leader of this phase cannot win with pyramids od a 5th H/M, then the tie rule avoids any "king making" role for this leader.

Let me get this straight: the French edition is not equal to the English edition ?? But why?! What changes? I understand that the components and materials are all the same right? Just change the rules? This also applies to the Atlas expansion?

It was the same with Fief 1429. Same components but differences between the Academy and Asyncron rules.

Does the English version come with the plastic army pieces which resemble helmets? Or is that just for Kickstarter backers?

I don't remember backing a French-specific Mare Nostrum Kickstarter campaign. Everybody backed the same campaign and have the same components, produced in the very same factory at the very same time. Do you really think they would make different components for each country ? It would be a big mess, and would have no economic interest at all.

Most likely an old outdated image. The Kickstarter page is filled with images of the wooden meeples. The plastic pieces were stretch goals and the shape of them wasn't even finalized until long after the kickstarter. So I think any images showing wooden meeples are old images.

I think we would have heard by now if the French versions had any component differences. Here is a thread of a french version box opening and it all looks the same:
Open the Box (French box)

The difference in rules is most likely due to translation issues. I'm not sure if they are intended or not. There has not been any contact yet from the English Publisher clarifying anything yet. Watch the FAQ thread for updates.

I wrote to Philibert and this was their response:

"Hello,
There is no differences between the french version and the english version.
The two versions have the wooden meeples, the components are similar.
The english version is more expensive because of the exportation costs.
Regards,
Maxime"

So both versions have the wooden components ??

The wooden components were replaced by plastic ones early in the campaign (stretch goal, NOT KS exclusive), so everybody has it in its box, no matter the language. Wooden meeples do not exist in this game. Relax !

they say that both versions have the wooden meeples, so obviously they mixed up wooden meeples and plastic figures in their answer. Did you hear about wooden meeples in an English version ? This should give you a hint ;)
