What is the reason for the ship that asks the claimant to give away a coin to a player of his/her choice? This just seems to create a difficult decision for the possessor of this card with no particular benefit to the game.

It gives some variety and also helps to balance the game a bit. Most of the time the possessor will give the extra coin to the weakest player rather than a strong opponent. So this helps keep everyone somewhat competitive.

It's also helpful when playing co-operatively because you can help other players gain money, so they can buy cards that might be needed for one of the contracts.

I'd have said giving players difficult decisions is a benefit to the game.

It's only one coin anyway, but it's an extra thing to think about: you might want to give the extra coin to a player who's currently behind, especially if they're in competition with another player for something you don't want. That way you might help them stop the other player from beating you!

It can thus act as a catch-up mechanism too. And of course if you really don't want to give an extra coin to any other player, it may make you risk drawing more cards when you othewise wouldn't.

All in all, I think it's a great addition to the game!

Don't forget that this can also be helpful in thwarting someone who is good at managing their money. A player at 11 coins will not be happy to get their 12th as they can already buy any card that may come up, but are then susceptible to taxation, and we know that taxation never comes up when you don't want it to, right?
