Hey folks! Typically when adding an expansion (when there is already an expansion active) do you remove the previous expansion cards, etc. before adding the new one?

Not me, I like to mix everything together in a big curated pile.

We use the cards from one big box expansion, one small, plus Miskatonic. This seems to keep dilution under control, so the sideboards see some action.

The best way is to think of the expansions as "cases" in a detective story: do you want to focus on one specific case, that needs to be solved by the end of the play? Put just one expansion in, no matter if it's a small box (and you're investigating about the spread of a new mysterious pagan Cult or the effect of a show on the minds of the viewers) or a big one (when there is something strange in a nearby town): you'll get a "Sherlock Holmes" kind of experience. Do you want "the Shield", HPL style? Put in everything from every box you have.

That said, there are some pieces of the game that add something completely new and unrelated with the specific case: personal stories, injury and madness cards, and so on... These you can just add to the base box, to be used in every game.

It all comes down to balancing a number of factors:

• setup/tear down time - playing "all in" is quicker
• theme dilution - playing "all in" dilutes the theme of each expansion
huge stacks of cards - some love 'em, some hate 'em
• you might need a method for dealing with cards that are not applicable to your current setup

In my case, I prefer to minimise theme dilution, so I choose to play with a single expansion in any one game, though I do have some permanently included components from multiple expansions as part of every game. I also happen to enjoy the prep (which I do at home before the session: cup of coffee, gaming-related podcast playing) and post-game sorting (coffee, podcast again). But YMMV.

YMMV?

The world of acronyms is like the universe for me ... ever expanding.

When I was young, I used to be a gas-guzzling gamer ... but now in my senior years I find the gas runs out quicker than I would like.

Here's a good discussion on working with expansions and what to include, etc:

I found that it helps setting up the game if you just put cards of every expansion together.

When playing, agree which expansions to use, and draw and discard cards until you come to a valid card.

I use all the expansions together everytime : i like epic game and more i have, more i can.

i have built a small tool/method to fix the dilution issue

https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1663574/arkham-horror-dilut...

This way, i can configure the Mythos flavor i want for a game session.

Prerequisites : do not mix the card in one pile, but 8 expansions piles to let my system working.
