How does solo mode work? Is it just shoot for a higher score than last game?

Not quite, first of all you have to try to terraform the Mars within 12 rounds. That's already quite a challenge.

I own and play a lot of solo games and can highly recommend Terraforming Mars. However, I played the game yesterday with a friend and it was really great.

Buy it, read the Mars trilogy and enjoy :-)

Except it is 14 rounds (called generations, that's how epic this is)

Not only is it a challenge to get the planet terraformed in the time allotted, but you are guaranteed variety due to the various corporations and the absolutely huge amount of different cards. You might decide in the first generation that you want to play a certain way, but by the fifth generation you will have drawn enough cards that you are just trying something completely different.

The challenge is in not just trying to get it all done, but making sure that you don't spend all of your MegaCredits on the awesome options that open up before you.

I think it is a great solo experience.

Hmmm.... what could the solo experience be compared to?

It appears to be somewhat similar to Agricola, where you try to quickly and efficiently set up a Scoring Engine, and random card selections change which path is optimal for you.

Differences include varied "Factions" which change your starting positiin and the value of certain actions.
