The following discussion assumes full play through, so very spoiler-y.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
I've found several threads where people misinterpreted the Relationship rules and assumed they could apply Relationships to existing characters, instead of requiring one character to be new. This rule is clear and not in dispute. For the record, I made this mistake as well.

Some discussions I've seen do a nice job of pointing out that Relationships, which encourage new characters, are a counterweight to Upgrades, which encourage character reuse. Again, no dispute on this point, either.

But one thing I have not seen discussed is my interest here. The existing rule requiring a new character to obtain a Relationship further reinforces the introduction of military characters. Now I realize this is kind of the point of the whole middle part of the game. But I am here to contend that there are already enough game mechanics encouraging military use that allowing free choice of Relationships at the start introduces an interesting alternative strategy, which is to continue using a primarily medical team. This is what I ended up with by accident. I think this should be a valid option which the current Relationship hampers.

I'm interested in discussion on how this might be a bad idea. I already know that this "house rule" has been implemented and has supporters and detractors. I already know that there are late game mechanics to undo any militarization, and indeed there are rewards to do so. So I'm mostly interested in how this house rule does damage to the early and middle game, or why we don't want to make a medical emphasis strategy easier to implement.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Aside from one search, I don't think there's anything in the game that rewards being medical - and there's definitely nothing that punishes being military (well, okay, if you don't use Paramilitary Escort, there is one thing that non-military characters are safe from).

There are definite rewards to fielding an all-military (or almost) team in terms of increased mobility and reduced dependence on research labs, but I can't think of any benefit to going all-medical.

Thread's labelled as having "full spoilers" so it's not like anyone's going to click in not expecting spoilers.
