Looking for an introductory wargame -- lasts around 90 mins. max.

Interested in 1775, etc... but open to suggestions.

What level/scale (e.g. tactical, operational, or strategic)?

Medium-heavy max... Looking for something heavier than a Memoir 44, let's say.

This might help:

Might be stuff that is right in your wheelhouse in terms of time/theme, but you also might stumble across something else you find interesting.

I think you're using the terms "tactical" and "strategic" in a different context than I was.

Given your interest in the AWI (American War of Independence), and the operational scale of M'44, I'd suggest Hold the Line / Hold the Line: The American Revolution, or possibly Black Powder if you're willing to venture into actual miniatures.

Lacks being heavier that Memoir '44. It can be debated on how intro it is, but Band of Brothers: Screaming Eagles or Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear! – Russia 1941-42 if you don't mind going for 2 hours.

2 hours isn't a problem. All of these suggestions sound great!

If the C&C system isn't an issue, C&C: Ancients, C&C: Napoleonics, and BattleLore are all heavier than Memoir '44 as well. Just pick a theme you like. Julius Caesar is another 2 hour game but considered by many the best in the Columbia block series.

If you want American Revolutionary War, I think your best choices would be:
Hold the Line
Clash for a Continent
1775: Rebellion
We the People/Washington's War

First 2 being similar to M44, the latter 2 being intro card-driven wargames.

1812: The Invasion of Canada is a very easy to get into wargame that's always been a hit when I've brought it out.

There are tons of excellent suggestions here.

I'd simply like to join the chorus as follows:

+1 Command and Colors Ancients. If you don't mind M44's card-driven mechanic, this is a step-up in complexity (albeit a small one)

+1 Hold the Line. A great light game. Action-point based. Coming out in a beautiful second edition.

1775 and 1812 are great, but these are entirely different types of games. They're much larger scale and all about area control and managing reinforcements. They're not about recreating a battle, but about recreating a war.

A great WWII game that is a significant step up in complexity (all the way to "medium") would be Conflict of Heroes.
