Just played my first two player game. Not sure how balanced it is. I was pretty aggressive on adventuring, while the other player just built up for a few rounds. Then he started pummeling me every round.

I don't see how it would be possible to come back once the pattern is established. Once they beat you down, they can just keep doing it every round.

Has anyone else experienced this?

You don't have to defend when attacked. Let them swing in, and if they over commit, keep your army alive and then pillage their defenseless city.
