Hi,

we like to play Descent from time to time, but in such an irregular manner, that we already quit the campaign twice, because nobody remembered what we did last or which heroes everybody played.
We're now thinking of playing just single missions without the campaign. What do you think, would that be feasible? Or would the later missions get to difficult, because we didn't improve the heroes?

Cheers,
Tim

Hi Tim,

I don't have a suggestion for playing single missions, but my group has been using the free Unofficial Campaign Tracker for Descent web app for keeping tabs on our campaigns. It works quite nicely, and we can take a longer break from the campaign knowing that it will be easy to pick up where we left off just by logging into the service and continuing the campaign!

Sure, this is possible! Check your rulebook for the "Epic play" rules. It does just what you want: playing Descent as stand-alone quests. You can choose different levels to play at which determine how much experience and gold you start out with to buy items and skills. Almost all quests can be played this way except for the interlude and finale quests. Also, quests from expansions and hero&monster packs can be played this way.

Descent is designed so that you can pick up and play any quest (except Interlude or Finale of a campaign) as a one-shot game. You can use starting heroes and overlord deck or give everyone some XP and the heroes some gold for a much longer setup time, with support for both act 1 and act 2 cards from shop and monsters.

Caveat: Some quests printed in the Act 2 section of the campaign quest guides are not balanced for act 1. Dead or Drowning (Heirs of Blood) for example, has the overlord reinforce the entire Zombie monster group using act 1 stats after every player's turn.
