Wouldn't be surprised if there's something after Essen. Then again, solitaires is a bit hard to do… so maybe nothing will happen. But you never know.

Which is where crowd-funding comes in and enables it to happen. Here's a JP one that shows at TGM https://camp-fire.jp/

That requires the designer to actually do that, too. Kuro isn't very likely to crowdfund anything.

Currently, only at Essen if you go there. We don't ship the games, though, so you'll have to either go to Essen or have a pal who goes there pick it up for you.
If it's picked up by a US publisher, then it'll take about a year to get things done. If not, maybe the Geek shop will have a few copies a bit after Essen.

You wrote "we don't ship the games," so I take it that you are involved, so...

If the designer can't find a better deal, would he be willing to sell through the geekstore here on bgg? Some other games from Japan have been doing that, and they sell out in a flash! For example, copies of Coffee Roaster showed up in the geekstore this morning, and they are already gone, again.

We're talking of exactly that at this moment. Quite a bunch of Manifest Destiny's games will (unless something goes wrong) appear in the Geek Store by the end of the year (takes a while to ship them).

(However, I'm afraid Garden of Minions is already out of print, so that won't be part of the bunch)

One thing that makes these games a bit hard to sell elsewhere than Essen and Game Market is simply the printing cost, which is high because of one big reason: small print run, which in turn is due to two things: 1) these games won't exactly sell 3,000 copies, 2) small storage space (indie game designers keep their games in their living room – go figure).

So, Garden of Minions with a convention price of 2500 yen / €20 might have cost as much as half, or more, to print. Kuro's crazy and sometimes goes higher than that. When selling to a shop, they pay roughly half the retail price. You do the math… unless the designer basically gives them away to the shop, the retail price will be so ridiculously high that no one will buy it.

Garden of Minions was printed in 100 copies. It contains dice which made it extra expensive. Due to high print cost and no storage space, Kuro can never reprint unless he's 100% sure the whole stock will sell off fast. So doing Garden of Minions in the Geek Store would be viable if Geek Store bought the whole print run off him – for a price higher than it was printed for. Which unfortunately isn't likely.

I'm saying this because a lot of people think that these Japanese indie games are made by big companies. Some of them are (Oink Games, for example, is a company), but most are by single individuals. It's easy to misjudge, because many look very professional (the Japanese local printers are pretty skilled) but remember: most of them are printed in print runs as small as 100–200, and most of them have a production price that exceeds half of the convention price – sometimes much more.

What we can hope for is that a Western publisher notices the buzz and wants to do an English/French/German version. And that's where you come in

I hope you do get a Western publisher!

Thank you for all the information. I really apprciate you taking the time to spell it all out.

People are buying out Coffee Roaster for 62.00 to 70.00 US on the geek store. Now, it's true that there are a limited number of geeks who will pay that much for a small solitaire game, but keep an eye on your buzz at Essen!

Oh, and if nothing else, please consider selling Print-and-Play files for a price.

http://www.drivethrucomics.com/join.php
or other places can handle the file sales and distribution easily.

You don't have to print.
The designer has no games in his living room.
You all get some extra income with nominal fuss.
Geeks who love games get access to what looks like a great one.

I really hope you get a publisher and that my suggestions become moot!

Or, how about contracting with funagain games to pick up essen copies for us release? They are handling this for a large number of other games.

We do. But as said, Garden of Minions is sold out and also out of print, and unlikely to reprint. If we can get Funagain to buy an entire reprint, that would work, but unfortunately it's not very likely.

This is the way to go. It'd be easy to print the board and cards out, and let's face it - what gamer doesn't have a TON of dice around he could use for this purpose?

When this triggered my subscription, I was hoping it was a post-EsenSpiele update announcing a publisher for North America!

(But, yes, I'd gladly pay ten or somfor a print and play version.)
