Here is something I have been working on recently -- Combat Quick Resolve Tables. Instead of the tactical procedure roll 2D10 on the table and it gives you results about tonnage and ships sunk and the effects of the combat on the sub, including damage, promotion, RTB, etc.

As an example, here is a table for a single sub attack on a C1 during war period 1 with a torpedo value of 0:

Sub Rating Tonnage Table Skipper DRM
2-1-2 [0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 2, 5, 9, 10, 14, 17] +0, +2, +3
3-3-2 [0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 2, 5, 7, 10, 11, 15, 18] +0, +2, +3
4-2-3 [0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1, 4, 6, 9, 12, 14, 18, 21] +0, +2, +3
5-3-3 [0, 0, 0, 1, 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, 20, 22, 25, 31, 35] +0, +3, +4

Sub Rating Ships Sunk Table Skipper DRM

The first die roll determines both ships and tonnage sunk; the second die roll determines any effects of the combat on the submarine.

The tables are split by war period and torpedo value and the pdf runs some 40-something pages right now. I have uploaded the file to BGG and am waiting for approval; in the meantime you can access rules and the tables on my homepage: http://mbroecker.com/wargames_sw_tables.html.

I have started the campaign to see how the tables hold up and the result is not too bad with the biggest advantage that I was able to run through a whole month of the campaign in 1 hour. At that speed you can really focus on the strategic issues.

A note for the curious: these tables were compiled after implementing most of the combat procedure in python (code available on GitHub: https://github.com/broecker/SteelWolves-AutoResolve). This allowed me to run an attack on loners or a convoy thousands of times in less than a minute. A second python script parsed the combat results, compared classes of submarines and built these tables for me (with optional output as latex tables or in html, while I was at it This approach should count as a 'Monte Carlo' simulation, in which we run a simulation many, many, many times to create a statistical solution.

Anyway, I hope these tables are of use to some of you. The standard way of playing SW seems to be through Vassal and, while the mod is very good, it does not seem right to me. With these tables you will have to only consult 3-5 tables per war period plus 2 die rolls per sub/wolfpack which does not seem to bad and keeps the game 'off-screen'. Let me know your thoughts.

I ran through the first WP to see how well the tables hold up; here are the results:

Date Tons Ships Lost VP Duration Notes
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sep 39 171 40 0 +7 ~1 hr
Oct 39 259 57 1 +3 ~30 mins Lots of ships back home
Nov 39 408 80 3 +4 ~45 mins
Dec 39 540 113 0 +5 ~45 mins Torpedo val=0 +1 skipper
Jan 40 714 150 3 +7 ~45 mins +1 skipper x2
Feb 40 916 182 2 +6 ~1 hour +2 skipper on Type-II
Mar 40 1081 208 1 +4 ~1 hour +2 skipper, also moved to Type-VIIs in July
Apr 40 1409 258 4 +9 ~1 hour +1 skipper; not sure about tonnage; good month
May 40 1781 318 3 +10 >1 hour
Jun 40 1990 374 0 +8 ~1 hour Change to WP4 in week 4
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Total 1990 374 17 63 ~9 hours

This is close to the historical result (63VP vs 49VP)? The final score is 1990 tons sunk with no capital ships sunk. The victory level in Campaign 2 is therefore reduced by 1 to a 'draw'.

It is now mid July and wolfpacks are an option. I found they speed up play significantly. Eg a 7-boat attack can be as quickly resolved as a single boat attack plus you get results such as 13 ships sunk for 86 tons.

There is still room for improvement in the tables. For example, air search and ASW is abstracted and averaged as the simulation currently does not support individual op areas. However, having 5 or more tables per war period per op area seems excessive.

Very nice! I'll be referencing them. Found alternate PDF download option (broken link at http://mbroecker.com/wargames_sw_ccomputer.html).
